What is fertility treatment leave?

Fertility treatment leave is a type of leave that supports employees undergoing fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilisation (IVF) or other assisted reproductive technologies. This leave allows employees to attend medical appointments, undergo treatments, and recover from any associated procedures without sacrificing their employment status or using up holiday allowances.

The availability and duration of fertility treatment leave may differ based on an organisation's policies and the country's laws. Some countries may provide fertility treatment leave as part of statutory maternity or paternity leave, whereas for some locations, it’s an optional company benefit.

Fertility treatment leave may be paid or unpaid and available to both men and women. Employers may require employees to provide medical certification or proof of treatment to qualify for this type of leave. By providing fertility treatment leave, organisations can support their employees and help them balance their personal and professional lives.
