Employee reviews

Mars UK's employees have anonymously had their say in what they think of the company

Buy extra holiday. Complete work from home so that you can live anywhere without worrying about having to come in once a week.

Great place to work, feel trusted, love the flexibility of WFH, but also the opportunity to meet colleagues face to face on a regular basis.

Mars is a very flexible business.

I like having flexibility of choosing the days we can go into the office, especially finding a day when all the team can make it into the office. My place of work makes me feel valued and supported.

Mars have a fantastic array of flexible policies/initiatives and is a fantastic company to work for. However in reality for operational roles the flexibility can be more limited.

I work in really flexible way and this works for balancing my work with the needs of my young family. This was easy to negotiate and supported by my line manager. I did though get strong push back linked to pay in this area from my USA based senior / business leaders which I hadn't expected and was disappointed by

I think the flexibility with working hours at Mars works great. Within my team, our manager trusts us to get our work completed and manage our own time. This may mean working later some days to get jobs complete but then other days being able to finish earlier. It would be good to have some clarity around whether working from a different country is ok occasionally throughout the year.

Mars has a great culture to work and trusts its associates to make the right decisions and the way in which they achieve their deliverables. An annual PDP process seems a bit labour intensive and not reflective of the way we work, so would like to see this adjusted.

I have been working full time hours in 4 days since I had my first child 6 years ago. So does my husband too, as we both work in Mars.

Super flexible- I personally like to keep to a set schedule but know that I can flex whenever I need to with no pressure.

Very high trust, measured on output not input. No micromanagement. Great line managers that champion flexible working and work life balance.

It is very people orientated and super friendly. We love to help each other!

Mars is a very flexible employer. I am a senior leader and work part time & from home. This is one of the things that has kept me here for over 19 years.

I feel that the company gives us sufficient freedom to choose. We as associates are responsible to decide what fits best.

Very flexible and accomodating, communication is key.

Flexibility is supported but volume remains high, so not always feasible to take advantage of.

I’ve worked here for 25 years in regional and global roles. I’ve been working mostly remote since at last 2005 and am given the responsibility to manage my time to do my job and look after my well-being. I’ve had an explicit personal well-being objective since 2012 that I discuss with my manager. Above all else I work with great people who are motivated to get stuff done, and feel I’m making a difference and learning on the way.

Very flexible -seem happy for me to work from different locations and not often that i'm specifically asked to be in the office for something

From the outset, I've always felt my well being was of high importance alongside my role. It's a very genuine culture that makes it a very supportive place to work.

very open & honest environment where your out of work activities are always considered - i think having this mutual respect makes people happier and more willing to work harder & better. Naturally our jobs need in office hours, and people recognise the value of being in person too

I love the independence and trust my company places in employees. I don't feel anxious and I'm able to perform to the best of my ability.

I love the attitude of my company and I feel fully supported.

I have a very flexible, part time role. I can work the hours which suit me, and as long as my calendar is up to date, no one questions me.

I do know that this is not the same for all associates, and it very much depends on the role that you do.

There is a great flexible working approach, whilst making sure that the job gets done. All of the previous policies mentioned are all offered by my company already.

Our company has many flexible and ground breaking policies in place that are open to all! It is however tricky to balance this with all roles, the pace and lean organisation.

I love working for this company. Makes me feel "home".

Great company and have the flexibility to work the hours i need to- it is more about output that hours put in!

I have worked at Mars for a long time and where flexibility can be offered it is. COVID has helped more line managers see what is possible we now just need to make sure we keep our collaboration and team spirit which makes Mars great.

About us

For more than a century, Mars, Incorporated has been driven by the belief that the world we want tomorrow starts with how we do business today. This idea is at the centre of who we have always been as a global, family-owned business. Today, Mars is transforming, innovating, and evolving in ways that affirm our commitment to making a positive impact on the world around us.

Across our diverse and expanding portfolio of confectionery, food, and petcare products and services, we employ 133,000 dedicated Associates who are all moving in the same direction: forward. With $40 billion in annual sales, we produce some of the world’s best-loved brands including DOVE®, EXTRA®, M&M’s®, MILKY WAY®, SNICKERS®, TWIX®, ORBIT®, PEDIGREE®, ROYAL CANIN®, SKITTLES®, WHISKAS®, COCOAVIA®, and 5™; and take care of half of the world’s pets through our pet health services AniCura, Banfield Pet Hospitals™, BluePearl®, Linnaeus, Pet Partners™, and VCA™.

We know we can only be truly successful if our partners and the communities in which we operate prosper as well. The Mars Five Principles – Quality, Responsibility, Mutuality, Efficiency and Freedom – inspire our Associates to take action every day to help create a world tomorrow in which the planet, its people and pets can thrive.

Flexible working at Mars UK

Our flexible working practices are based around our, hybrid Future of Work strategy – it’s one that reimagines where, when and how work gets done to maximize efficiency and empower our 32,000 office-based Associates, all while preserving what’s best about our culture.

“Our Future of Work strategy is designed to empower Associates to make more choices about where, when and how to work to be the most productive and effective,” Nici Bush, VP Workplace Transformation, said. “As a global business with 140 offices there can be no one-size-fits-all solution. but we will strive to create a consistent experience across segments and regions for office-based Associates.”

As a business, we’ve always known the flexible working, ensuring we give our Associates the tools they need at work, to live a happy, healthy life.

Approach to diversity & inclusion

At Mars, we know the world we want tomorrow is inclusive and diverse. We believe a diverse team with people who have different perspectives creates a stronger business. That’s why we provide a number of different Associate Resource Groups (ARG) to support people of every culture, background, and lifestyle – to reach their full potential, be heard, and feel valued. So, no matter who you are or what your story is, you’ll find the support you need to be your best self here. We also foster communities through our Women in Engineering and Women in R&D groups, which help empower female Associates to reach their full potential.

What do we think of Mars UK?

Flexible working has helped employees at MARS UK to achieve a much better work-life blend. I am so impressed to see an organisation as established as MARS UK embracing flexible working in such a meaningful way. It's hard to be a company in the retail and e-commerce sector, but employee feedback shows that MARS UK has challenged the status quo and has set up a genuinely flexible working environment. Kudos👏🏻

Meet who might be hiring you

My favourite thing about working at Mars is the people that I get to learn & grow from every day. It's just not a cliché to say that it's the people who make a place, and at Mars you don't need to be here long to realise that.
