From low lying areas in the south to the Forest of Bowland, the Pennine moorlands and the mountains and fells in Cumbria, the North West is a region of striking contrasts and habitats and we are proud to support work across these landscapes. On International Day for Biological Diversity, we are highlighting our work in partnership with National Trust at Holcombe Moor and Stubbins Estate in the West Pennine Moors. Here, leaky dams are being installed across moorland, farmland and woodland to help slow surface water flow and support natural flood management. By re-wetting areas of the landscape, the project is creating habitats for wildlife while also supporting better water quality, reducing flood risk and increasing resilience in these areas. This work forms part of our Big North West Upgrade, where we are working with partners across the region, from Bowland to Cumbria, on projects including tree planting, peatland restoration and rainwater management.

Recently, volunteers from across the Vyrnwy project team came together to support a local school in Norley Village as part of the Vyrnwy Community Investment initiative. Teams from United Utilities, OCU Group and Brown Rural Chartered Surveyors Partnership spent the day working together spreading 20 tonnes of gravel across playground pathways and laying 8 tonnes of bark in adventure play areas, helping to create safer, brighter and more enjoyable outdoor spaces for pupils to learn and play in. The school was selected as a beneficiary of the funding following a road closure linked to the Vyrnwy Aqueduct Modernisation Programme (VAMP), a major refurbishment of one of our oldest and most strategic clean water assets. Constructed between 1881 and 1938, the aqueduct has supplied water to communities across Cheshire, Merseyside and the wider North West for more than a century, carrying up to 210 million litres of water a day to around one million customers. Now more than halfway complete, VAMP will help improve the long-term resilience and reliability of water supplies across the region, ensuring communities continue to receive high quality drinking water for generations to come. Alongside the engineering work, the programme is also delivering wider benefits for local communities through investment, volunteering opportunities, skills development and environmental improvements across the route.

It's no secret that the early careers market is on its knees right now. Every other post seems to point to it being the toughest time for youth unemployment - with experience being one of the biggest barriers to entry. 1) Approximately 729,000 unemployed 16–24 year olds in the UK, with a youth unemployment rate of 16.2% 2) More than 1 million young people are now classified as NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training), the highest level for over a decade 3) As many as 1 in 6 young people could become NEET within five years if current trends continue Whilst these numbers are depressing, it's within our power to change the direction of travel ... So I am SUPER proud today as we launch our first Pod Placement Year programme, welcoming not just 1 or 2 placement year students, but 8 into the world of work across a number of different departments (with more on the way!).

Last week, we celebrated a big milestone - 10 years of Sergio at Zoonou! Over the last decade, Sergio has become a huge part of who we are as a company. Not just through his incredible technical expertise, but through the way he works with people every day. Those who work with Sergio know he brings a rare mix of deep technical knowledge, curiosity, patience, and genuine care for the people around him. He’s someone who never settles for something that “just works” - he wants to understand why, improve it, and help everyone else understand it too. As Harriet put it, Sergio is “an absolute joy to work alongside.” And honestly, we couldn’t say it better ourselves. Michael , who’s worked with Sergio for the full 10 years, summed it up perfectly: “Sergio has a rare blend of technical capability with human empathy that makes him so great to work with.” Whether he’s supporting teammates, solving complex challenges, or helping shape the collaborative culture we’re proud of at Zoonou, Sergio brings positivity and thoughtfulness into everything he does.
