Metaverse Technology

Improbable was founded in 2012 by Herman Narula and Rob Whitehead. As Cambridge University computer science graduate students, they shared a love of games and an ambition to make bigger, better multiplayer worlds than were technologically possible.

Today, we’re headquartered in London and have employees around the world. We’ve received over $600m in funding from some of the most reputable investors in the world, including the SoftBank Vision Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, Horizons Ventures and NetEase.

Many of the people at Improbable have credits on some of the most successful video games in history. Others have come from a range of high-tech industries outside of game development. This breadth of talent means we’re able to bring the widest possible range of capabilities to bear on the most difficult problems that multiplayer developers face.

Approach to inclusion

Meaningful. Measurable. Practical.
We’re building an environment where people can do their best work and feel like they belong. Our success relies on it. That means getting the culture right, sticking to our values, and welcoming different people, perspectives and opinions. Which means we’ve got work to do.

As a young, fast-growing company, we have an opportunity – and a responsibility – to do a lot more. We’re dedicating a great deal of time and thought to diversity, inclusion and belonging. Crucially, we’re also taking action. The following commitments are designed to be practical, actionable and impactful. They will, no doubt, evolve over time, but they will always mean that we can – individually and collectively – be held accountable.

Our nine commitments to diversity, inclusion and belonging:

  1. We will ensure we have the capacity and expertise needed to deliver against our commitments.
  2. We are committed to creating a healthy environment where people are able to express how they feel and draw attention to issues without fear.
  3. We are committed to attracting, hiring and retaining individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  4. We are committed to ensuring our internal processes, throughout the employee lifecycle, are free from bias.
  5. We are committed to educating ourselves on the issues that exist so that we can impact change.
  6. We will invest in training opportunities for all employees, using evidence-informed interventions.
  7. We partner with organisations that allow us to increase our reach into diverse communities.
  8. We support employees who wish to dedicate more of their time towards volunteering.
  9. We are committed to exploring ways to make metaversal experiences more representative and to make them powerful tools for challenging perceptions.

Flexible working at Improbable

Almost every role is available as remote, hybrid or in-office. We have great office spaces, but are equally happy if you’d prefer to work from home some or all of the time.

Improbable’s remote-first work policy is designed to give employees flexibility and autonomy regarding where and how they work. We understand some people prefer to work in the office, and others feel more comfortable working from home or another location. Our goal is to create a work environment that empowers each individual to make the best decisions for their personal and professional needs.

We believe this policy provides our employees with the flexibility and support they need to thrive – personally and professionally. And we remain committed to creating a positive, inclusive work environment that fosters growth, collaboration and innovation.

Working Environment

Remote working is fully supported but flex in hours themselves is harder due to work demands.

Culture

It's a great flexible company where I don't feel micro-managed!

Benefits

Flexible, inclusive, great benefits. There's nothing not to like, really :)

Working Environment

Improbable is one of the best in terms of the working environment and freedom. Really happy to be part of it.

64a4a7cac6ccee18c1361674

Purpose

Improbable is a great place to work - I feel valued and useful to the company, my work is interesting and varied, and I have a great, conveniently-located office that I can choose to work at once a week.

Working Environment

As a new parent, work/life balance is incredibly important to me and I feel the balance Improbable have achieved is fantastic. Those 1-2 hours a day I'd ordinarily have spent commuting is time I now share between my young family and working more effectively with colleagues.

Culture

Some decisions are made by the senior leadership without gathering context or communicating in advance, which sometimes causes disruption and stress that feels like it could have been avoided.

Some senior leaders work longer hours, and while they support the flexible working for the individuals, they don't role model the flexible workstyle themselves.

Working Environment

Flexibility is core to the culture at Improbable. People can work from about 8 different countries permanently or can work from abroad for up to about a month temporarily. In the UK, there are offices in London & Nottingham that are in great locations - and are dog-friendly - but there is no expectation to come in. So some people use the offices regularly, while others choose to just come in for team or company events. Most people work 8 hours a day including a lunch break, but there's no strict schedule. Benefits are geared towards flexibility - unlimited vacation days where managers encourage you to take them, generous leave policies like parental, sick, caregiver leave, etc. There is a budget for your home office when you start and a credit card with £150/month to spend on anything you like (gym, lunches, etc).
