About Motorway

Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace – our award winning, online-only platform connects private car sellers with over 7,500 verified dealers nationwide, who compete to offer the best price. Founded in 2017, our technology makes the process refreshingly easy, earning us an 'Excellent' Trustpilot rating with over 70,000 reviews. We're not just building a platform; we're changing how people sell cars.

Backed by leading investors like Index Ventures and ICONIQ Growth, and following a successful $190 million funding round, we're on a mission to transform the used car market.

About the role

Motorway's looking for a seasoned Product Design Manager to support our talented and growing Product Design and User Research team.

We're proud of our culture here at Motorway and know how vital it is to create a collaborative and creative space. You'll be key in making this happen, with a real passion for helping others grow. You'll work closely with our experienced Head of Design to build our design practice into something truly world-class, attracting and keeping the best talent.

Here's a taste of what you'll be doing:

  • Managing a team of 9+ Product Designers, supporting their day-to-day needs and helping them grow through regular goal setting, reviews, and coaching.

  • Working with the Head of Design to develop new and existing processes to make the team even more effective, like onboarding new folks, evolving our progression framework, and running team retros.

  • Balancing workloads and making sure we have the right skills across the team to deliver great results.

  • Helping hire top-notch Product Designers, refining our selection and interview processes as we go.

  • Helping build our design culture by contributing to our weekly team rituals, running workshops, planning design-focused events, and other activities.

  • Exploring and encouraging continuous learning and development for the team.

  • Playing a key role in developing our core design principles.

  • Building strong relationships with product, engineering, and the wider organisation, communicating clearly with stakeholders and representing product design at all levels.

Requirements

Our team's backgrounds are really diverse, and team fit is important to us. As our new Product Design Manager, we expect you to be passionate about building, developing, and motivating teams, and you'll probably have a few of these attributes:

  • You've mentored and helped junior and senior product designers grow.

  • You've got plenty of experience managing product design teams in a scale-up.

  • You've worked as an IC in Product Design and understand what it takes to build successful digital products like mobile and web apps.

  • You love running workshops to generate new ideas and are good at making sure everyone gets involved.

  • You've led online and offline sessions with stakeholders to check design decisions.

  • You know what it takes to make a positive impact in a fast-moving environment.

  • Experience in a two-sided marketplace is a nice-to-have.
