About MoneySavingExpert
We are hiring for MONY Group, but this role sits within the MoneySavingExpert area of the business. MoneySavingExpert.com, founded and Chaired by Martin Lewis, is dedicated to cutting consumers’ bills and fighting their corner. For 20 years, campaigning journalism has been at the heart of MSE’s mission. The site is behind many notable campaigns, in areas as diverse as student finance reform, energy bills affordability, mortgages help, scam ads regulation and even helping consumers reclaim an estimated £1bn in bank charges and £12bn in PPI payouts.
With millions subscribing to receive the weekly MSE’s Money Tips email and visiting the site monthly, MSE ranks among YouGov’s most recommended brands, and is one of the biggest news sites in the UK.
But what really makes MSE stand-out from the crowd is the Editorial Code, which lies at the heart of everything we do. Regardless of your role at MSE, it’s everybody’s job to champion the consumer - and that makes us a truly unique, exciting and rewarding place to work. If you are inspired by what we do or see yourself as a passionate consumer champion, and have the grit and enthusiasm along with the skills we seek, a career in MSE might just be the right career step you are looking for.
About the role
The Campaigns team is a small but busy and high-profile team within MoneySavingExpert. With the MSE mission statement – cutting your costs, fighting your corner – at our heart, we work to fight financial unfairness, deliver better consumer outcomes and win stronger rights and protections.
The team aims to influence and set the policy agenda across a wide range of personal finance and consumer areas. This involves varied work that draws on research, policy development, public affairs, stakeholder engagement and communications. Naturally, you will work closely with our founder, Martin Lewis, and can expect to come into regular, face-to-face contact with Cabinet ministers and high-level Government and regulatory policy officials, representing MSE and consumer interests UK-wide.
You’ll identify and recommend potential high-impact campaigns for MSE as well as manage the existing campaign portfolio, drawing on a wealth of expertise from across MSE alongside the detailed research the team carries out. You’ll work closely with the editorial, news, press and social teams to amplify our campaigns and you’ll make sure that MSE users’ voices are heard in the corridors of power.
As Campaigns Lead, you’ll play a major role in shaping our influencing strategy, planning and prioritising our campaigns, and, as a senior member of our Editorial Leadership Team you’ll work to support and develop MSE’s wider strategy too.
What you will be doing
Oversight of and accountability for MSE’s campaigns planning and strategy, including prioritisation of workload, projects and opportunities.
Collaborating across MSE to identify emerging issues of consumer unfairness and drive forward new campaigns to end them.
Representing MSE among Government, regulatory and business stakeholders, and carrying that responsibility with care – eg, through events, speaking opportunities, private meetings, roundtables and working groups.
Advising the site leadership team (including the founder and Editor-in-Chief), on the political and regulatory horizon, and tactical approaches to achieving campaign aims.
Leading research and data analysis projects, with a view to informing and supporting campaign policy/objectives, ensuring accuracy and impartiality throughout.
Writing, editing and setting direction for policy documents, consultation responses, MSE-led reports and external stakeholder briefings.
High-level evaluation of public affairs performance and findings, with a focus on outcomes for consumers.
People management, mentorship and professional development of a combined public affairs, policy and research team.
Decision-making responsibility on BAU campaigns matters.
Day-to-day management of budget and suppliers.
What we look for
Proven experience working in policy and advocacy.
Experience of working directly with regulators, government departments, businesses and third sector organisations.
Confidence to engage with senior stakeholders and articulate MSE’s position.
Experience working with public-facing campaigns, landing messages on target and compelling stakeholders to act.
Evidence of communicating directly with consumers on the ground, exercising understanding and sensitivity.
Strategic and critical thinking – understanding which tactics will help MSE to reach target stakeholders and achieve best outcomes for consumers, and ensuring our campaigns and policies are well-reasoned and evidenced.
Confidence in advising senior leadership on policy and public affairs – including Martin Lewis and the Editor-in-Chief.
The ability to scope, budget and lead external work needed for campaigns.
A high-quality, meticulous person who can critically review all outgoing publications.
Line management experience – with a growth mindset for yourself and your team’s goals.
Leadership experience – knowing how the work of your team fits into the wider work of the business/brand.
