Why this job matters

The Data Solution Design Specialist is responsible for designing scalable, robust, and business-aligned data solutions that underpin analytics and reporting across the organisation.
Sitting within a development sub-squad and interfacing with the lead, data consultant and engineers, this role ensures that data solutions are fit for purpose for today and the future. They should conform to the data architecture / model guardrails - which are which you will be responsible for supporting in defining, and enforced by the Data Solution Design Manager to enable scalable future growth, supporting increased data volumes, users, and use cases without unnecessary complexity or cost.

What you’ll be doing

Design Authority & Standards

  • Support the Data Solution Design Manager in defining and maintaining design standards for analytical data products (data models, architecture and pipelines).• Ensure designs align to data architecture standards, security requirements, and guardrails
  • Act as the design conscience within the allocated sub-squad ensuring consistency, performance, and governance across products.
  • Embed principles of reusability, automation, and scalability in all data solution designs.

Solution Architecture & Delivery

  • Within the assigned sub-squad: Lead on the end-to-end design of analytics data solutions from design through to delivery by translating business and product requirements into clear, well-structured data solution designs that are effective from both a data and visualisation perspective
  • Partner with data engineers, analysts, and visualisation developers to ensure solutions meet both business and technical requirements.
  • Champion integration of analytical data products across the data estate, reducing duplication and improving interoperability.
  • Identify and mitigate scalability and performance risks early in the design lifecycle

Consulting & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Act as a design authority, providing assurance and guidance on data solution designs working closely with Data consultants, Data engineers, Analytics engineers, and visualisation developers during build
  • Communicate complex technical designs clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences
  • Provide thought leadership on data product design, advising on trade-offs, options, and strategic fit.
  • Influence colleagues to adopt best practice approaches.

Governance & Quality Assurance

  • Ensure compliance with data governance, security, and privacy policies.
  • Support design reviews and solution walkthroughs and sign-offs.
  • Champion data quality, accessibility, and transparency in all products.

Skills required for the job

Essential

  • Demonstratable evidence of designing scalable and performant analytical data products (data warehouses, semantic layers, data models, APIs, dashboards).
  • Intermediate knowledge of data modelling (dimensional, relational, semantic) and visualisation design best practices.
  • Experience working with modern data platforms (cloud data warehouses/lakes, ETL/ELT tools, BI platforms such as QlikSense/Power BI/Tableau).
  • Consulting ability: able to engage with stakeholders, challenge requirements, and translate into clear, scalable designs.
  • Understanding of data governance, metadata management, and product lifecycle management.
  • Understanding of cloud cost management and FinOps principles

Desirable

  • Experience working in Agile or product-led delivery models
  • Exposure to advanced analytics, ML feature store design, or data science enablement.
  • Knowledge of automation frameworks and CI/CD for data products.
  • Prior experience in telecoms, media, or similar data-rich industries.
  • Understanding of cloud cost management and FinOps principles

Essential
