About the role

A Cloud Engineering Specialist (Platform) is responsible for designing, building, operating, and continuously improving shared engineering platforms, DevOps tools, and services across both cloud and on premises environments. The role enables engineering teams to deliver software that is secure, reliable, scalable, performant, and cost efficient, regardless of where workloads are hosted.
Guided by Well Architected Framework principles, the specialist ensures that engineering best practices are embedded by default into platform infrastructure—including on prem, hybrid, and cloud foundations—as well as into enabling pipelines and operational tooling. This allows development and testing teams to focus on business outcomes and product delivery, rather than infrastructure complexity, tooling overhead, or ongoing platform and service maintenance.

This supports BT’s strategic priorities by designing solutions that are customer focused, outcome led, and aligned to business objectives (Customer First).

The role brings clarity and structure to complex delivery challenges (Clear), challenges existing approaches to drive simplification and improvement (Challenger), and works collaboratively across teams to enable successful implementation (Connected).

Through accountable ownership of platform stability & outcomes, the role demonstrates strong commitment to delivering reliable, high quality solutions that enable transformation (Committed).

What you’ll be doing

Platform Solution Delivery - You will design and deliver secure, reliable, and repeatable platform solutions that meet business and engineering needs.
• Platform, DevOps & Testing Enablement - You will build, operate, and continuously improve shared platforms, DevOps tools, CI/CD pipelines, and testing services across cloud and on prem environments.
• Secure & Resilient by Design - You will embed security, resilience, compliance, and reliability by default, aligned with BT security and risk frameworks.
• Well Architected Engineering - You will apply Well Architected Framework principles across platform infrastructure, pipelines, and tooling.
• Cross Team Collaboration - You will collaborate with engineering, testing, security, operations, and architecture teams to shape practical and scalable solutions.
• Specialist Technical Expertise - You will provide specialist expertise in one or more domains such as platform engineering, security, quality engineering, observability, or resilience.
• Enterprise Architecture Alignment - You will ensure solutions align with enterprise architecture standards, guardrails, and approved technology patterns.
• Recommendations & Solution Design - You will create clear recommendations, solution designs, and scope documents, identifying dependencies, risks, and gaps early.
• Platform Operations & Reliability - You will operate platforms with a strong focus on availability, observability, operational excellence, and continuous improvement.
• Knowledge Sharing & Mentoring - You will share knowledge through standards, documentation, and mentoring, helping teams adopt consistent engineering practices.
• Technology Advisory & Innovation - You will advise on relevant technologies and emerging trends to inform platform, DevOps, and tooling strategy.
• Architecture Governance - You will support architecture governance and design forums as a trusted technical contributor and reviewer.

Essential Skills / Experience

• Designing practical solutions - You can turn business and engineering needs into clear, workable technical designs that teams can build, run, and support with confidence.
• Understanding user and business needs - You listen carefully to stakeholders and teams, and clearly capture what is needed from platforms, tools, or services.
• Making informed decisions - You can compare options, explain trade offs, and make clear, evidence based decisions that balance risk, cost, and value.
• Working with modern platforms - You have hands on experience designing, building, or operating cloud based and/or on prem platforms, including infrastructure, DevOps tools, or shared services.
• Delivering solutions into live environments- You can support the safe rollout of new platforms, tools, or capabilities, considering reliability, security, and impact to users.
• Operating and improving systems - You monitor system health, performance, and reliability, and act when things do not work as expected.
• Collaborating with others - You work well with people from different teams and backgrounds, value diverse views, and contribute to an inclusive, respectful working environment.
• Learning and adapting - You show curiosity, learn from feedback, and are open to building new skills as technology and ways of working change.
• Platform engineering experience – You will have experience in building or maintaining shared platforms, DevOps tooling, CI/CD pipelines, or testing services across cloud or on prem environments.
• Security and reliability awareness – You will understand how to design systems that are secure, resilient, and compliant by default
• Well Architected understanding- You will be familiar with Well Architected Framework principles and how they influence platform and solution design
• Infrastructure automation – You will have experience using automation or infrastructure as code to improve consistency and reduce manual effort
• Documentation and knowledge sharing – Your ability to create clear documentation, standards, or guidance that helps others work more effectively
• Coaching or mentoring – Your experience in supporting or guiding other engineers through technical discussions or shared problem solving

Desirable Skills / Experience

• Designing systems that integrate well - Creating solutions that work smoothly with other systems, including through APIs or shared services.
• Working within regulatory or compliance environments - Understanding how to design and deliver solutions that meet legal, regulatory, or industry standards.
• Shaping product direction - Helping to define a longer term vision or roadmap and aligning teams around shared goals.
• Enterprise level architecture - Designing solutions that fit within a wider organisational technology landscape.
• Supporting bids or proposals - Contributing technical input to business cases, tenders, or funding proposals.
• Observability and operations - Exposure to monitoring, logging, alerting, or incident response practices that improve platform reliability
