Jack Cohen founded Tesco in 1919 using just £30 to set up a market stall in East London. On his first day trading he sold £4 of goods, making £1 profit on sales.

Today, Tesco employs 330,000+ employees across 11 markets and has recorded group sales of £62.8bn.

We're really proud to be a business full of varied and exciting opportunities for all. We give our colleagues the tools to shape their own future with a career path that meets their own personal goals and aspirations.

Whether colleagues want to learn and grow in their current job, find a new job in a specialist area or move to a completely different part of the business to gain more experience, there's lots of exciting career opportunities here at Tesco and plenty of support available.

🛒 Everything we do begins and ends with our customers. By understanding our customers, we can anticipate and respond to their needs and expectations. As a Group we serve a wide range of different customers, in different settings, from retail customers through to banking, mobile, Booker’s wholesale customers, and dunnhumby’s retailer and supplier clients.

🤝 The role we play in the thousands of communities we serve is vital – whether it's creating good jobs, supporting local suppliers and producers, or helping local causes through our community programmes.

🌎 Our commitment to sustainability is core to our business. It drives our work across our own operations and our supply chain to reduce our environmental impact and support a healthier way of living.

Life at Tesco

At Tesco, we put our values at the heart of everything we do. Our colleagues work to one goal, helping to make every day a little better for our customers, colleagues, communities and planet.

We invest in our teams and aim to create a friendly place where work is enjoyable, and you can feel empowered to develop your career.

Your career development is important to us. With mentoring and learning opportunities every step of the way, we’re here to provide the tools you need to succeed.

We know that wellbeing means putting the things that matter first. Tesco benefits are designed to help you take care of your mental, physical and financial wellbeing. We work to make sure you have what you need to thrive, in and out of work.

We embrace and celebrate the backgrounds and identities of all our colleagues. Our business is built on unique perspectives, so we do everything to create an environment where everyone can be themselves and feel welcome.

Flexible working at Tesco

We put colleague wellbeing first, in lots of little ways (and some big ways too). It’s all about helping our colleagues make every day a little better for themselves and their families, in whatever way works for them.

With flexible and hybrid working options to support your work-life balance and access to wellbeing experts to support colleagues’ mental health through our Employee Assistance Programme. As a Tesco colleague, you’ll have access to everything you need to help you be at your best.

At Tesco we recognise that over time the needs of our colleagues change, from our children growing up and needing different childcare, to family relatives becoming elderly, or perhaps just taking time to explore new hobbies and interests.

Flexible working arrangements provide the opportunity for a healthy work-life balance. As well as allowing us to attract and retain colleagues who enjoy a wide range of activities outside of work, it allows colleagues to balance both their own needs and the needs of our customers.

We have updated this policy, ahead of UK legislation, giving colleagues the option to request flexible working as soon as they join Tesco, instead of the having to wait for six months. This means, we can offer flexible working in a way that suits colleagues, inside and outside of Tesco.

Inclusion & Belonging at Tesco

No two customers are the same, neither are our colleagues. We celebrate the backgrounds and identities of all our colleagues. After all, it’s their unique perspectives that help make us who we are. So, we do everything we can to create an environment where everybody can be themselves.

  • Level 3: Disability Confident Leader - As a Disability Confident Leader, we provide, and continue to improve on, a fully inclusive and accessible recruitment process, so every candidate can thrive. And whether they’re shopping or working with us, we’re committed to making sure everybody feels truly welcome at Tesco.
  • Tesco was one of the first companies to voluntarily publish gender pay gap data.
  • 44% of external senior appointments were ethnically diverse in 2024/25.
  • Our colleague networks continue to underpin our strategy, offering colleague support whilst also acting as strategic business advisors

Wherever you join us, you'll have the chance to be part of our networks, created by our colleagues, for our colleagues. Please note that our colleague networks differ based on our business area.

  • Disability - As unique individuals, we all need different support at work. The Disability network aims to highlight, educate on, and help remove barriers faced by colleagues who are neurodivergent or have a disability.
  • Race & Ethnicity - The Race and Ethnicity network engages the wider community for a more inclusive future. They share experiences, highlight and work to break down barriers faced by ethnically diverse colleagues, as well as advise on and organise religious, cultural, and awareness events.
  • LGBTQ+ -Creating a safe environment to connect and seek support, the LGBTQ+ network helps us shape business policies, products and services for our LGBTQ+ colleagues and customers. They also help create and roll out initiatives that uplift the wider community.
  • Armed Forces -As the biggest employer of service leavers in the UK, we want to give former and current members of the armed forces – and their families – the support they need. As well as providing guidance on everything from transition from military life to career development, the Armed Forces network also champions those who volunteer as reservists.
  • Parents & Carers - Working while being a parent or carer can create unique challenges. So, the Parents and Carers network helps colleagues find the right support and advice, while advising on our policies to try and make the realities of working life easier.
  • Gender Equality - Championing a gender-equal workforce, the Gender Equality network supports and empowers women to develop professionally and personally. They raise awareness of women’s health – tackling taboo topics through group discussions and events, while consulting on policies and processes that impact women in the workplace.
