Job Description

Our Mission

We're not your average benefits platform; we're the unordinary force that uplifts people's lives. Our technology is the link that connects the entire benefits ecosystem, creating better outcomes for employers, employees, brokers, and providers.

Our mission is clear: we're here to create a world where everything operates at its very best, ensuring that every employee receives the support they need to live life to the fullest, both at work and beyond.

Your Mission

In the Design team at Ben, you’ll help us to understand people, ask the right questions, and make abstract ideas tangible.

You’ll focus on outcome, not output, and aim for solutions, not quick-fix hacks — keeping humans at the centre of the work. You’ll be trusted to do the right thing and you’re given plenty of opportunity to grow. You’ll ask “why?” before you ask “how?” as a key player between Product and Engineering. Just because we can build it, it doesn’t make it useful.

Overall, the design team at Ben works with product teams to untangle complex customer problems. Explore, test and deliver useful, usable and delightful ways to manage global benefits. You help build empathy for our customers, so that we can build a better product.

The design lead sets the bar for high quality, user-centric experiences and gives the team feedback to ensure that their work is up to par. They must deeply understand the domain and have expert design craft, in order to mentor their team, provide necessary context, and model the skills they want their folks to develop. Then they need to step back to let their team take ownership of an outcome. In Ben’s player coach setup, there will be strategic projects that require the seniority of the Design Lead to deliver - usually in connection with key customers or new products.

Things you’ll be working on…

  • Roadmap for UX: You own every part of Ben’s product design and user experience: desktop and mobile web, mobile apps. Here, you’ll maintain the design roadmap aimed at keeping delivery running smooth but with a strong focus on UX consistency across our entire platform.

  • Stakeholder alignment: The design lead has to stay in close sync with the rest of the business - especially product management - so you can push your vision of what the Ben UX should be and negotiate UX trade-offs based on constraints that may arise.

  • Coach: As Design Lead you will coach and mentor a strong team of 1-3 designers and be responsible for their professional development. You will line manage members of your team through regular 1-1s and focus your team on delivering features quickly, effectively and to the highest standard. You’re responsible for their professional development through design critiques and other mentoring sessions.

  • Player: You will lead on a few very strategic design projects on your own, usually in connection with key customers or new product lines.

You will love this role if…

  • You are a systems thinker; you design systems, not just individual features or journeys

  • You are a first principles thinker who is hypothesis driven

  • You feel ready and confident to not only own a product but evolve it

  • Experience of working within an Agile development team at a high pace

  • Experience in designing user interfaces for a wide variety of web and mobile experiences.

  • You have a good eye for design and are capable of creating both low-fi sketches and pixel-perfect visual designs.

  • Knowledge of various designs methodologies and processes.

  • An excellent communicator of design work and the rationale behind your proposals.

  • You are passionate about design, a thought-leader and the face of design at Ben.

  • You lead a strong team of 1-3 experienced designers and guide them in their professional development

  • You enjoy hiring and growing a small but incredibly talented design team

and you...

  • are a self-starter who thrives on autonomy, enjoys a rapid pace and wants to make a difference

  • have a continuous improvement mindset. You appreciate that there are always ways to do things better and ensure your team does too

  • have a preference to action-oriented behaviour with just enough analysis, as compared to too much time spent doing analysis with no action

  • have the ability to make decisions balancing different factors such as business requirements, technical integrity, overall priorities etc.

  • appreciate the opportunities and challenges of a distributed work environment

  • are solution-focused with a pragmatic approach to problem-solving
