Your Mission

As an Engineering Lead at Ben, you will be joining at a unique time in the evolution of our product-engineering organisation as we develop domain-specific specialisation which allows us to deliver excellence at speed in small squads with high levels of ownership.

You’ll own the technical direction & implementation of a product domain at Ben with end to end responsibility.

The Engineering Lead position at Ben is a hybrid role: 50% individual contributor and 50% people coach. We want you to be hands-on in solution design, system architecture and feature development, while also helping the engineers within your squad to master their skills, remove roadblocks and consistently deliver at a high level.

What you'll be working on

  • Design, implement and deliver software features with full ownership, using your senior technical expertise

  • Take responsibility for the coaching, mentoring and mastery within your squad to develop & maintain a high-performance engineering squad

  • Drive initiatives across squads and chapters to identify and solve important problems, coordinating with other engineering leads and stakeholders on platform wide technical challenges

  • Take full accountability and own delivery, progress and quality of your a squad

  • Collaborate with product stakeholders and other members of the squad to scope and estimate optimal solutions for business problems

  • Ensure that security considerations are taken into account, based on current best practices (e.g. OWASP Top 10, AWS Well-Architected Framework) in all software development and infrastructure projects

Our cross-functional delivery squads are focused on business goals and solving problems in an efficient manner. We want the squads to collaborate on new ideas and projects to find the best solutions.

Ben is built on Python 3, Django, PostgreSQL and React. We run on AWS and follow engineering best practices, with a pragmatic approach.

You'll love this role if you are/have...

  • Fluent in Python or one of the following major programming languages: Go, Rust, C, C#, C++ or Java

  • Experience (or willingness to learn) with Typescript and modern web frameworks like React

  • Proven track record in leading and/or coaching software development squads

  • Have a strong background in software engineering, systems design and data modelling

  • Excellent software engineering knowledge: Clean architecture & design patterns, SOLID design principles and clean code

  • Apply information security in building secure web applications

  • Understand and appreciate the principles and practices of agile and lean ways of working, but with a pragmatic edge

  • Excellent communication skills adaptable to both tech and business audiences
