Microsoft UK’s Corporate External and Legal Affairs (“CELA”) department has an immediate opening for a Government Affairs Intern. This is a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience at the intersection of public policy, legislation and technology across the UK market. At Microsoft, Interns work on real-world projects in collaboration with teams across the world, while having fun along the way. You’ll be empowered to build community, explore your passions and achieve your goals. This is your chance to bring your solutions and ideas to life while working on cutting-edge technology. The intern will play an active role in shaping external engagement and regulatory strategies across key policy areas such as data protection, cybersecurity, AI, and digital transformation. The position will focus on supporting the government affairs function within CELA UK. The role will report into the Government Affairs VP for the UK and will be in Microsoft’s offices in London.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Contributes to execution of Microsoft strategies and/or programs related to government affairs.
  • Conducts political, policy, technology, and other research to support the strategies of the team.
  • Coordinates budget of team and supports logistical issues.
  • Assists in the gathering of data and intelligence information to support the preparation of position papers, policy briefings, presentations and other documents
  • Stays up to date on issues relating to public policy and geo-political topics.
  • Conducts research to advance Microsoft policy and political agenda.
  • Participates in and coordinates intra-group and cross-group projects.

Representing Microsoft

  • Assists with planning, organizing, and executing internal/external events by developing content, drafting materials, and engaging in social media.

External Relationships

  • Builds relationships on behalf of Microsoft at relevant external events and partners with leaders to drive relationships; tracks changes in the regulatory environment and proposals for changes; maintains open communication with regulatory agencies.
  • Supports efforts to advance Public Sector goals.

Internal Collaboration

  • Participates in and coordinates intra-group and cross-group projects.

Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

  • The ideal candidate should hold or be studying towards a Public Policy, Law, Political Science, International Relations, or a similar degree.
  • You must be legally authorised to work in the United Kingdom to be eligible for this role. (Legally authorised = has citizenship or has been granted a valid visa or work permit).
  • Enthusiasm for knowledge of technology and emerging policy issues around AI, cloud computing, and data governance.
  • Written and oral fluency in English.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least 1 year of prior experience in a related field, such as government relations, regulatory affairs, public policy, law or technology.
  • Demonstrated ability in developing and managing strategic relationships to influence public and technology policy.

  • The ability to review, draft, or contribute to policy documents, briefing notes, whitepapers, advocacy materials.

  • Highly motivated, proactive, and capable of identifying and solving problems creatively.

  • Growth mindset with a focus on continued learning and improvement and ability to regularly think outside the given parameters to see if there is a more effective way to accomplish a task.
