Job Description
This is an excellent opportunity for a lawyer qualified in Japan (bengoshi) to make a transformative impact on Japan's approach to climate change.
The senior lawyer will be an important team member in ClientEarth’s Tokyo office and will participate in using the law creatively and effectively to protect people and the planet. The lawyer will be part of the Resources, Energy Mobility, Asia group (REM Asia).
ClientEarth is a group of international legal experts on climate, energy and the environment. We use the law in partnership with governments, the private sector and the public to address climate change, capture the opportunities of the low carbon transition and protect nature.
We have built a global team of energy, corporate and financial law experts specialising in climate risk and decarbonisation across nine offices in Europe, China, Japan and the United States – providing the legal framework and tools for the private sector to lead on climate action, supporting governments to create enabling regulatory frameworks to accelerate a just energy transition and buidling a wider legal community of climate advocates . We are helping to strengthen corporate climate governance and embed climate change in investment, regulatory and policy decisions around the world.
ClientEarth in Japan is embedded within Japan’s social, political, economic and cultural context and is using the law to support accelerated government and private sector leadership on climate change. The Tokyo office is bringing together lawyers with backgrounds in energy, corporate, financial and environmental law, as well as other professionals with backgrounds in climate change and communications.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct and oversee research and analysis, identify opportunities, and help shape and deliver our strategy to increase climate ambition and accelerate the energy transition
- Scope and further develop ClientEarth’s plans in Japan, contributing to and refining the strategic programme priorities, and ensuring its alignment with global and regional strategies
- Identify opportunities and help shape and deliver strategy for using energy, environmental, corporate and financial law, policy and regulation in engagement, advocacy and legal interventions to drive climate ambition and action and accelerate the energy transition in Japan and across Asia
- Build and maintain strong relationships with ClientEarth’s key civil society partners and international donors
Skills, Knowledge & Expertise
- Fluent (CEFR level C1) in English
- Fluent (CEFR level C2) in Japanese
- Member of a Japan bar (qualified as a bengoshi) with a background in one or more of the following fields: energy, corporate, financial, litigation
- Experience as a mid-level lawyer in a law firm, in-house department and/or government or regulator in Japan
- Good knowledge in one ore more of the following fields and industries: energy sector, industry, financial sector
