Why this job matters

We’re investing in the future of BT International – building new telco platforms for Data (Fabric) and Voice with focused network security services. We are improving customer and colleague experiences, moving to a new IT architecture, finding more efficient ways of operating and rationalizing our customer and product portfolio. It’s a complex transformation journey, over multiple years, with significant investment and involving teams from across BT.

The Discovery Specialist will drive strategic change across International by using consulting methodologies to; identify, scope and enable the delivery of critical transformation programmes. These programmes are complex and could impact multiple business units. They are long-term initiatives and represent a major investment and are critical to transforming the business.

You will utilise best practice discovery and design approaches and promote their adoption within the business as applicable. You will evaluate and monitor market conditions on a regular basis and adjust business strategies to suit the shifting conditions. You will also conduct business performance and competitive analyses and generate reports and provide inputs to recommendations for relevant leadership/management.

You will work in partnership with the Senior Transformation Manager(s) and cross-functional teams, including the Transformation PMO, to ensure that programmes are clear on their scope, ensure they are interlocked with other programmes, and dependencies are well understood.

What I’ll be doing – your accountabilities

  • Internal Consultancy: work in partnership with stakeholders across the business, conducting discovery and analysis of business processes, models, operations to identify opportunities for change that inform overall transformation roadmaps. Make sound, informed and well-structured recommendations for change and influence key business decisions. Input to recommendations to the Discovery Lead and Transformation Director on what programmes to start, stop, refocus and accelerate in order to deliver our overall objectives. Communicate clearly to the business how and when transformation will impact them.
  • Strategic Planning & Alignment: support the scoping, development and hand-over to execution of the transformation roadmaps by identifying and scoping recommending initiatives and programmes that execute on strategic objectives, drive efficiency and growth, and deliver tangible value. Inform strategic initiatives so that they are clear on scope, dependencies and enablers. Contribute to the funnel of new strategic initiatives.
  • Business discovery, Analysis & Insight: undertake discovery, analysis and research activities to identify executable opportunities to meet International goals, including baselining and benchmarking activities. Make informed, data-driven decisions and recommendations from data and insight on how to best drive value.
  • Horizon Scanning: Bring outside-in perspective, identifying emerging trends, opportunities and risks that should be considered. Monitor industry dynamics, markets, competitors and customer behaviours, using research and expert insight to guide decisions, anticipate disruptions and plan for the future.
  • Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement: Galvanise and align stakeholders across BT International (up to and including director level) – inspiring colleagues to go beyond and deliver brilliant outcomes

Skills required for the job

  • Ability to understand complex, inter dependent, set of transformation programmes.
  • Analytics / consultancy skills:
    • Ability to utilise best practice discovery and design approaches and promote their adoption within the business as applicable.
    • Ability to evaluate and monitor market conditions on a regular basis and adjusts business strategies to suit the shifting conditions.
    • Ability to conduct business performance and competitive analyses and generate reports and provide inputs to recommendations for relevant leadership/management
  • CI accreditation, or similar is desirable.
  • Considers different perspectives, the organisational context and behaviours and the links between structure, people, process and technology to make sure we succeed.
  • An ability to manage senior stakeholders, including up to director level and influence to the programme strategy

Experience you would be expected to have

  • At least 2 years in large scale transformation projects
  • Experienced in discovery and design techniques to establish strategies to best drive value
  • Proven change-agent and demonstrate experience in driving transformations, fostering collaboration, strategy formulations, and resolving performance issues
  • Experienced working across a wide range of teams and stakeholders to align plans and deliver business outcomes
  • Demonstrated systems thinking experience to analyse value flows, and diagnose and resolve complex problems across cross-functional contexts
  • Experience of mitigating risks, implementing best practices, and following strict governance procedures

Key decisions

  • Input to recommencdations on scope of programmes.
  • Inputs to recommendations to the Transformation Director on what programmes to start, stop, refocus and accelerate in order to deliver our overall objectives.
