Job Description

Blood Cancer affects 250,000 people every year, with 40,000 newly diagnosed each year. We set out our fundraising strategy in 2022 with the ambition to beat blood cancer and we will achieve this by increasing the amount of research and services we fund. To do this we will be doubling the amount we invest over the next five years and continuing our current income growth across all fundraising streams. Public Fundraising is a key strategic area for the charity and Blood Cancer UK is looking to grow its presence and impact here, inspiring more people to choose to fundraise for us. As Head of Public Fundraising, you will set the vision for Public Fundraising at Blood Cancer UK and lead an ambitious team of Senior Managers to build individual strategies and operational plans to ensure continued income growth.

Key Responsibilities

MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES
Strategy

  • Bring together the mid value/mid volume Public Fundraising activities at Blood Cancer UK and create a strategy for Public Fundraising in line with our income growth projections and current team strategic priorities. This would include Regional, Sports, Supporter Relations activity, as well as public fundraising activity across legacies and individual giving.
  • Accountable for delivering ambitious budgets across the public fundraising portfolio of Sports & Mass Pax, Regional and Supporter Relations. Produce high-level financial modelling to inform long-term income projections. Monitor budget across the financial year and work with the Fundraising Managers to identify and mitigate risk.
  • Set the ambition for public fundraising at Blood Cancer UK, designing the evolution of the team to drive forward cohesion in all public fundraising activities across Sports & Mass Pax, Regional, Supporter Relations, Legacies and Individual Giving.
  • As a key member of the Engagement Leadership Team, the Head of Public Fundraising will contribute towards the delivery of the charity’s strategic, operational, and departmental plans.
  • The Head of Public Fundraising will drive a high-performance culture and be part of the Leadership Team.

Acquisition

  • Develop and implement integrated public fundraising acquisition and supporter marketing strategies to grow income.
  • Identify growth opportunities within our existing portfolio and proactively seek new revenue streams building our new (and renewed) product development.
  • Take risks and support the ambition to proactively respond to new opportunities and fast follow opportunities to drive forward acquisition.

Retention

  • Develop a retention strategy and ensure that anyone who fundraises for us receives a gold standard of supporter care across public fundraising.
  • Work closely with Senior Supporter Relations & Journeys Manager to develop supporter journeys that drive cross-selling opportunities to maximise the life-time value of our supporters and optimise retention.
  • Lead the charity’s approach to fulfilment, monitoring and assessing current fulfilment models and driving forward efficiencies in our fulfilment processes.
  • Consider how we can approach uplifts across public fundraising (including legacies and IG) and upgrades including consent levels, gift aid, surprise and delight moments.

Innovation

  • Lead the development of an innovation culture, identifying and sharing best practice and utilising agile methodologies to develop public fundraising initiatives to drive growth.
  • Engage in market and supporter research to inform decision-making and development of new activity and work to ensure public fundraising is proactive in fast following opportunities and pivoting to new areas of growth.

Audience

  • Grow the charity’s understanding of our public fundraising supporter base, their motivations and behaviours. Maximise the use of our CRM database and champion data analysis and insights to inform the development of audience led fundraising campaigns and products.
  • Embed an audience led approach to Public Fundraising working closely with our Communications, Mass Marketing and Services teams to gain insight, commission supporter research, interpret complex data analysis, and involve people affected by blood cancer in how we develop public fundraising.

Digital

  • Foster rigour and improved use of digital tools, being a market expert for how we can best use digital platforms to drive forward growth.
  • Assess and monitor our existing digital fundraising products and journeys, looking at how we can use digital solutions to drive better supporter experiences and user journeys.

General Responsibilities:

  • Manage the Senior Sports & Mass Participation Manager, Senior Regional Relationships Manager & Senior Supporter Relations & Journeys Manager to develop individual strategies and operational plans to build mass participation events, community fundraising, and deliver effective supporter journeys.
  • Provide inspiring leadership, direction, support and line management to the public fundraising team, ensuring objectives and targets are met and team development is prioritised.
  • Champion collaboration across public fundraising teams to maximise cross-selling of opportunities, both within the Regional, Sports & Mass Pax, Supporter Relations Teams but also across public fundraising in Legacies and Individual Giving.
  • Be part of the wider charity leadership team, including participating in charity-wide projects and taking a proactive role in senior-level planning and decision-making.
  • Coaching, mentoring and supporting the team to enable them to perform to the highest standard to contribute towards achievement of organisational goals and objectives
  • Effectively managing team performance, including setting objectives and personal development goals for your team.
  • Identifying appropriate learning and development opportunities for individual and team development.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Extensive experience in leading complex and successful public fundraising programmes/campaigns in a charity setting which includes multiple income streams.
  • Experience of building high performing teams.
  • Experience developing strategic plans and budgets and managing teams to turn these into cohesive operational plans with clearly identified and managed risks.
  • Proven track record leading a Public Fundraising portfolio, with proven results in innovation and driving significant growth across a large portfolio of supporters.
  • Results orientated with a real drive and passion for delivering results in a growing area.
  • Proven experience of creating a positive culture which embraces change, performance and innovation.
  • Proven self-starter with demonstrable commitment to personal professional development and those in your team, with an eye for detail and excellent communications skills.
  • Confident in promoting a data-driven culture and developing strong marketing strategies through data led decisions.
  • Confident communicator and strong leader with good interpersonal skills and the ability to influence and motivate others.
  • A positive attitude to technology, insight and data, including an enthusiasm to use new technologies and ways of working to deliver team/individual objectives
  • A collaborative approach to working with other teams
