Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

Animal Rescue

We've been here for every dog and cat since 1860

Animal Rescue

At Battersea, we aim never to turn away a dog or cat in need of our help. We give each one lots of love and expert care and get to know their characters and quirks so we can find them a new home that’s just right for them.

All the knowledge we gather in our centres helps us to improve the lives of the animals we’ll never meet, through our work with other rescue organisations and charities. We also help people make informed choices when getting a pet, we provide training and welfare advice, and we campaign for changes in the law when we see that dogs and cats or their owners deserve better. We want to be here for every dog and cat, wherever they are, for as long as they need us.

Culture

Battersea has a warm, open and inclusive culture.

Every member of staff and volunteer is united by a common passion: dogs and cats. This drives us forward together and ensures that even when we have differing priorities, we always understand what the end goal is.

Outside of the day job, there are lots of optional clubs, groups and events. Summer and Christmas parties are held to bring all our centres and people together, as well as numerous other informal gatherings that celebrate big and small moments throughout the year. There are also several clubs and societies that are open to all from softball to book club, and the chance to get closer to our animals through lunchtime cat socialisation sessions, fostering animals and more.

We also welcome new starters to join and engage with our Inclusion Networks. Our Menopause, Disability and Wellbeing, Ethnic Diversity and LGBTQ+ networks are open to all, including allies, helping us to better understand the perspectives of our colleagues, provide support for one another and drive change to be a more inclusive Battersea.

Approach to inclusion

At Battersea, we are committed to developing and supporting a workforce and inclusive culture in all that we do. We aim to ensure that this commitment, reinforced by our values, is embedded in our day-to-day working practices and our work together.

We want to ensure that everyone who comes into contact with Battersea is welcomed, valued and respected regardless of their race, age, gender, sex, disability, sexual orientation, social class, religion or belief. We strive to create lasting change for animals and the people that care for them and believe that creating a truly diverse and inclusive Battersea, which is proudly open to all, will be essential in our mission to deliver greater impact for dogs and cats everywhere.

We’re proud of the inclusive culture that we’ve fostered at Battersea. But we also know that we need to do more to make our workforce and sector even more diverse and inclusive, and take actionable steps to ensure this is embedded in our culture and our everyday ways of working.

We are a member of Inclusive Employers, who partner with us to look at continual improvements and best practice in terms of inclusion and diversity, a Disability Confident Committed employer, and a Menopause Friendly Committed employer. We have also committed to the #ShowtheSalary campaign, where we ensure salary transparency for all our roles to help address pay gaps in the charity sector, especially for Black candidates and women.

We recognise the importance of supporting positive mental health at work. That's why we have a wide pool of Mental Health First Aiders who help us to promote a workplace culture where staff feel comfortable to discuss mental health issues openly and feel supported by their colleagues when they do so.

Battersea is committed to listening and working with our staff and volunteers to further our inclusive culture and implement best practice. One way we do this is through our staff-led inclusion networks. They are fully inclusive and open to all, including allies so people can better understand the perspectives of their colleagues. We work closely with our inclusion networks to determine how we can best mark key dates in the calendar year that reflect the diverse makeup of our staff and volunteers in ways that are meaningful, authentic, relevant, and impactful.

Flexible working at Battersea Dogs & Cats Home

We're passionate about offering flexible working options.

Our office-based colleagues split their time between site-based and home working, spending around 50% of the working week at our Battersea office. We believe this enables colleagues to enjoy the benefits of home working, while allowing for collaboration and interaction with our animal-facing staff and maintaining a connection to our cause.

To enable a good work life balance, we offer ad hoc flexible working around our core office hours of 10am to 4pm.

It goes without saying that four-legged friends are a common sight in the Battersea offices too!

Culture

Cannot fault anything. Working here is wonderful. Managers are great.

Inclusion

Battersea is really welcoming, inclusive and caring. The culture is warm and helpful and people work well across departments. I feel I have autonomy to manage my time, flexing childcare pick ups around meetings and being able to adjust my start and finish times when needed. Battersea is passionate about diversity and inclusion, with senior leadership supporting and promoting inclusive behaviours.

People & Community

Battersea really makes an effort to gather feedback from staff and take actions from it. For instance, in one of the staff surveys there was a theme that people wanted to know more about decisions being made by the senior leadership team and CEO, so the CEO now does a fortnightly blog and the Directors rotate doing a blog on their main regular meetings. I also feel very safe and supported as a person in the LGBTQ+ community.

Working Environment

I love lots of things like being able to bring my dog into the office, the ability to help socialise cats in my lunch break, get a subsidised hot meal for lunch, and everyone I've met has been super friendly!
