Role Description

This role sits within the FCAS Manufacturing Engineering team and is focused on developing and maturing the assembly build philosophy for the GCAP airframe platform. The successful candidate will assess project and technical requirements, evaluate assembly manufacturing processes, and conduct tolerance analysis to support manufacturing approach decisions.

Working closely with design, manufacturing technology and producibility teams, the role will monitor evolving design data to understand impacts on assembly methods and facilities. The position also provides technical input into project standards and supports assembly trade studies to ensure efficient, manufacturable and robust assembly solutions throughout the programme lifecycle.

Core Duties

•Collate and develop understanding of project and technical requirements that will shape the airframe assembly build philosophy

•Evaluate, select and where required assist development of the assembly manufacturing processes for the core platform. Conduct tolerance analysis where required to support these evaluations

•Monitoring GCAP platform design data as it matures to assess impact on assembly build philosophy and facility impacts

•Providing technical input into the definition of project standards and assess their impact the overall assembly build philosophy

•When required, support the Assembly Producibility team in conducting various assembly trade studies

Essential skills

•Applicant to hold a minimum HNC qualification and / or completed a recognised Craft / Technician apprenticeship

•Experience of interpreting engineering data including 3D CAD Models, 2D Drawings, R Specs and processes

•Must have excellent team working skills and be comfortable working in a rapidly changing early project lifecycle environment which can be challenging and exciting

•Prepared to apply for enhanced security clearances

The Assembly Build Philosophy Team

You’ll join the Assembly Build Philosophy team, a specialist team of seven engineers within the wider FCAS Manufacturing Engineering organisation, which currently comprises around 32 people and continues to grow. The team is responsible for defining how the GCAP aircraft could be assembled, exploring manufacturing approaches, emerging technologies and build strategies that will support the future aircraft programme.

Working at the early stages of aircraft design and development, you’ll collaborate with colleagues across Manufacturing Engineering, Airframe Design, Structures and Materials, as well as international partners in the UK, Japan and Italy. This is a unique opportunity to help shape the manufacturing vision for a next-generation international combat air programme while working on a diverse range of technically challenging projects.
