Job Description

We are seeking to recruit an experienced Enterprise Architect who will play a pivotal role in shaping the organisation’s future strategy for artificial intelligence, with a particular focus on but not limited to Generative AI, Agentic AI plus the platforms and governance which will enable them to deliver value to the business. The successful candidate will be responsible not only for setting the strategic technology direction of our AI initiatives, but also for overseeing automation capabilities, recognising the close interrelationship between how AI can deliver value through automated actions.

In addition, a strong appreciation and understanding of integration capabilities will be essential to allow AI to automate tasks by integrating to enabling systems. This multifaceted position requires a visionary leader who can drive seamless integration and maximise the value of AI and automation across the enterprise.

Reporting to the Head of Enterprise Architecture, this role is accountable for defining and governing the enterprise architecture strategy, standards, principles and target-state roadmaps across AI, integration and automation. Acting as a trusted advisor to senior technology and business stakeholders, the Enterprise Architect will ensure these capabilities are developed as enterprise-wide assets that deliver measurable business value whilst maintaining appropriate levels of governance, resilience, security and regulatory compliance.

The role will provide strategic architectural leadership across major business and technology initiatives, influencing investment decisions, establishing architectural frameworks and ensuring that technology choices align with Admiral's long-term strategic objectives. The successful candidate will balance innovation with effective risk management, creating the conditions for AI, integration and automation capabilities to scale safely, consistently and efficiently across the organisation.

Main Duties

  • Define and maintain enterprise architecture strategies, principles, standards and roadmaps for AI, integration architecture and automation capabilities.
  • Establish architectural frameworks that translate business strategy and objectives into scalable, secure and sustainable technology solutions.
  • Lead the development and governance of enterprise reference architectures, patterns and standards across AI, integration and automation domains.
  • Provide architectural leadership for strategic programmes and initiatives, ensuring Enterprise Architecture engagement occurs early in the lifecycle and shapes direction before solution design begins.
  • Define and govern Admiral's AI architecture, including Generative AI, Agentic AI, responsible AI principles, governance frameworks, platform strategy and risk controls.
  • Establish integration architecture standards covering APIs, event-driven architecture, middleware platforms, orchestration and enterprise data exchange.
  • Shape and evolve Admiral's automation strategy, supporting the transition from task-level automation towards intelligent, enterprise-scale and agentic automation capabilities.
  • Ensure governance, security, privacy, compliance and operational resilience requirements are embedded into architecture from inception.
  • Lead architecture governance activity, providing guidance, challenge and approval for significant architectural decisions and technology investments.
  • Collaborate with Enterprise Security, Data Architecture, Engineering, Risk and Technology leaders to ensure alignment across the enterprise landscape.
  • Identify opportunities to simplify technology platforms, reduce duplication and improve reuse through standardised architectural patterns.
  • Monitor emerging technologies, industry developments and regulatory changes, assessing their impact and opportunities for Admiral.
  • Produce architecture artefacts, roadmaps and executive-level recommendations to support strategic planning and investment decisions.

Key Skills, Qualifications and Experience

Essential

  • Significant experience operating as an Enterprise Architect, Principal Architect or equivalent senior architecture leadership role within a large and complex organisation.
  • Proven experience developing enterprise architecture strategies, governance frameworks, standards and technology roadmaps.
  • Strong understanding of Artificial Intelligence technologies, including Generative AI, Agentic AI and responsible AI governance.
  • Significant experience designing and governing enterprise integration architectures, including APIs, event-driven architectures, middleware and distributed systems.
  • Experience developing automation strategies and architectures covering workflow automation, intelligent automation and robotic process automation technologies.
  • Strong understanding of enterprise architecture methodologies, architectural governance and target-state planning.
  • Demonstrable experience translating business strategy into enterprise technology direction and measurable outcomes.
  • Proven ability to influence executive stakeholders and provide credible challenge across business and technology functions.
  • Excellent communication, stakeholder management and presentation skills, with the ability to explain complex concepts to technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Desirable

  • Experience within insurance, financial services or another highly regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of AI governance frameworks, model risk management and emerging AI regulation.
  • Experience with API management, integration platforms and event-streaming technologies.
  • Strong understanding of security, risk management, compliance and resilience requirements within enterprise technology environments.
  • Experience with automation technologies and intelligent workflow platforms.
  • TOGAF, ArchiMate or equivalent Enterprise Architecture certification.
  • Experience operating within cloud-native environments such as Azure or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience leading enterprise-wide technology transformation or modernisation programmes.

Working arrangements

  • This is a remote role, with an expectation to attend the Ty Admiral Cardiff office once a quarter or as and when required.
