Job Description
About the role
The USA Benefits Manager is a strategic and hands-on leader responsible for the design, delivery, and continuous improvement of employee benefits programmes across the United States. As a key member of our global Benefits team, you'll partner closely with regional counterparts to ensure our total rewards offering is consistent, competitive, and compliant.
A defining priority for this role is leading our transition from a fully insured health insurance model to a self-funded model, a significant multi-year initiative requiring expert vendor management, financial analysis, plan design capability, and strong cross-functional partnership. You'll own this journey end to end.
What you'll be doing
Health Insurance Strategy & Self-Funding Transition
- Lead the company's transition from fully insured to self-funded health insurance, including planning, timeline management, risk analysis, and stakeholder communications
- Partner with ExperINS and other healthcare consultants and TPAs to evaluate stop-loss insurance, claims data, and plan design options
- Develop and present business cases and financial models to leadership supporting the self-funding decision and ongoing optimisation
- Design competitive, cost-effective health plan options (medical, dental, vision) tailored to US employee needs and aligned with company budget objectives
- Benchmark plans against market data annually; manage open enrolment including communications, employee education, and system configuration
Benefits Budget & Financial Oversight
- Own the US benefits budget: forecast costs, track actuals, analyse variances, and report to Finance and leadership on a regular cadence
- Identify cost reduction opportunities without compromising employee experience, a critical lens as the company moves toward self-funding
- Monitor claims trends, utilisation data, and renewal pricing across all health and ancillary benefit carriers
- Coordinate with Finance on benefit-related payroll deductions, employer contributions, and cost allocation
Vendor & Partner Management
- Serve as the primary relationship owner for all US benefits partners, including ExperINS (healthcare broker/consultant), Deel (global payroll platform), 401(k) plan provider, and ancillary benefit carriers
- Lead RFP processes, negotiate contract terms, service level agreements, and pricing with all partners
- Build strong, collaborative relationships with providers to drive service quality and resolve escalations
401(k) & Retirement Benefits
- Manage the company's 401(k) plan including eligibility, employer match, vesting schedules, compliance testing (ADP/ACP), and annual 5500 filings
- Coordinate employee communications and educational resources around retirement savings
- Stay current on DOL and IRS regulations affecting retirement plans
Global Collaboration
- Act as the US subject-matter expert within the global Benefits team, sharing insights and best practices across regions
- Collaborate with People Operations, HRBPs, and Payroll to ensure a seamless, consistent employee experience globally
- Support global mobility and cross-border benefits questions for US-based employees
Compliance & Governance
- Ensure all US benefit programmes comply with ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, and applicable state mandates
- Maintain plan documents, SPDs, and required government filings (Form 5500, ACA 1094/1095)
- Partner with Legal and external counsel on complex compliance matters
Employee Experience & Communications
- Design and deliver clear, engaging benefits communications, from new hire onboarding through annual open enrolment and year-round education
- Champion employee understanding and utilisation of available benefits; gather feedback to continuously improve programme offerings
Qualifications
What we're looking for
- 6+ years of progressive benefits experience with substantial focus on US health and welfare plans
- Direct experience with or strong working knowledge of self-funded health plan structures, stop-loss insurance, and TPA relationships
- Demonstrated experience managing a benefits budget and building financial models for benefits cost analysis
- Experience managing external vendors and benefits brokers through RFPs, renewals, and contract negotiations
- Working knowledge of US benefits compliance: ERISA, ACA, HIPAA, COBRA, FMLA, and 401(k) regulations
- Experience with global HR or payroll platforms; Deel experience strongly preferred
- Strong project management skills and excellent written and verbal communication
A few nice to haves
- Experience at a global or multinational company, partnering across regions on benefits strategy
- CEBS or CBP designation
- Prior experience moving a company from fully insured to self-funded health insurance
- Familiarity with ExperINS or similar healthcare consulting relationships
- Experience with benefits technology platforms and HRIS integrations
