Job Description

We have a couple of exciting new opportunities for RAN Transport Designers to join our Core Engineering team.

These are key roles to develop the designs and low-level reference configurations for the transmission & transport aspects of Virgin Media O2’s radio equipment (Radio Base-Stations and, in the case of 2G, BSCs). This will allow the integration with Virgin Media O2’s transmission & transport networks (access, aggregation and core) and will also support inter-working with other equipment (e.g. mobile core network elements) with which the radio equipment has a peering relationship.

Virgin Media O2 deploys radio networks using equipment from multiple suppliers (Nokia, Ericsson, Mavenir and Samsung) and support these radio networks over a variety of transmission & transport networks. This role will encompass support to both test and trial activities to ensure that the designs and low-level reference configurations are suitable for wider deployment. The role will further extend to the consideration of steps that will facilitate smooth migration from one design / configuration to another.

Who we are

The UK’s fastest broadband network. The nation’s best-loved mobile brand. And, one of the UK's biggest companies too.

Diverse, high performing teams - jam packed with serious talent. Together, we offer the UK more choice and better value, through our boundary-pushing, customer-championing values and ambitions.

Together, we are Virgin Media O2, and we can't wait to see what you can do.

Accessible, inclusive and equitable for all

Virgin Media O2 is an equal opportunities employer and we're working hard to remove bias and barriers for our people and candidates. So, we build equity and inclusion into everything we do, from the policies we craft to the relationships we shape. We support and encourage you to be your authentic self throughout your application journey with us.

The must haves

  • Experience of working in a technical design role (gained either with a network operator or with an equipment supplier), including of creating high-level designs, low-level designs and low-level configurations, of supporting test activities and of working with change control processes.
  • A good working knowledge of 2G, 4G and 5G RAN architectures (preferably both traditional and vRAN, incl. O-RAN), including the network elements that are involved, the logical interfaces and the types of traffic that those interfaces carry.
  • A good working knowledge of packet networking, e.g. Ethernet fundamentals, IP fundamentals, Ethernet & IP QoS mechanisms, transport protocols (e.g. UDP, TCP, SCTP and RTP), routing, security (e.g. IPsec architecture and protocols), monitoring protocols (e.g. BFD and TWAMP), DHCP, DNS, router resilience (e.g. VRRP), etc.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills required for presenting complex technical concepts combined with strong influencing and persuading skills required for encouraging colleagues to change established processes and to adopt improvements.

The other stuff we are looking for

  • An understanding of transport-provided synchronization, especially SyncE and PTP / ToP.
  • Some familiarity with Radio Base-Station (preferably both traditional and vRAN, incl. O-RAN) and BSC solutions from different suppliers (especially from Ericsson and Nokia, but also from other suppliers, e.g. Mavenir, Samsung, etc.).
