Job Description

We’re on an exciting journey to grow our business, and we’re using cutting-edge technology to make it happen. As part of the Core Engineering team within the wider Consumer Engineering group, you’ll help build products that really support both our customers and colleagues. If you want to be part of a forward-thinking, innovative team right in the middle of some big changes, this is a great opportunity.

We are on the hunt for a Senior Technical Lead to take charge across a few small, cross-functional feature teams. You’ll lead the way in designing and building scalable, cloud-native applications that help drive the business forward. If you love creating well-designed, easy-to-maintain systems and enjoy guiding teams through tricky tech challenges, this role could be a perfect fit.

You’ll be responsible for the architecture and design of applications that are modular, solid, and built to scale on cloud platforms. You’ll live by the “You build it, You run it” mindset, making sure our software is secure, fast, and reliable, following MACH principles and the architectural frameworks set by our wider engineering community. You’ll also promote best practices, encourage sharing knowledge, and find creative solutions to complex problems where there’s no ready-made answer.

Who we are

The UK’s fastest broadband network. The nation’s best-loved mobile brand. And, one of the UK's biggest companies too.

Diverse, high performing teams - jam packed with serious talent. Together, we offer the UK more choice and better value, through our boundary-pushing, customer-championing values and ambitions.

Together, we are Virgin Media O2, and we can't wait to see what you can do.

Accessible, inclusive and equitable for all

Virgin Media O2 is an equal opportunities employer and we're working hard to remove bias and barriers for our people and candidates. So, we build equity and inclusion into everything we do, from the policies we craft to the relationships we shape. We support and encourage you to be your authentic self throughout your application journey with us.

The must haves

In order to be considered, you must have the following experience;

  • Proven experience in a senior technical role within a complex environment, leading multiple technical squads or diverse technical disciplines while working closely with senior stakeholders across product, delivery, enterprise and solution architecture, and engineering
  • Strong expertise in modern software development tools, including cloud hosting, containers, Kubernetes, APIs, and DevOps practices like Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery with experience in Google Cloud Platform (GCP)
  • Experienced in micro-frontends, microservice APIs, event-driven headless architectures, and RESTful web services, with strong skills in TypeScript and JavaScript tools like Node.js, Fastify, Next.js, and React, working alongside headless CMS platforms such as Storyblok, Contentful, or Contentstack
  • Skilled in full-stack application development and deployment across all environments with customised configurations and monitoring, and experienced in CI/CD with GitLab, containerisation using Docker, and Kubernetes orchestration, especially on Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE)
  • Experience leading teams, managing people, mentoring, and keeping tasks on track

The other stuff we are looking for

We'd also love you to bring;

  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to develop creative solutions
  • Passion for staying up-to-date with emerging technologies and sharing knowledge within the team
  • Agile approach, comfortable with iterative delivery and continuous improvement

What's in it for you

Our goal is to celebrate our people, their lives and everything in-between. We aim to create a culture that empowers everyone to bring the best versions of themselves to work each and every day. We believe the most inclusive and diverse culture makes for a better business and a brighter world.

Next steps

If we feel like a place where you can belong, we'd love to learn more about you as a person and your experience to date. Once you've submitted an application the next steps of the process, if successful, are likely to include a personality profile assessment, followed by a technical and competency-based interview.

When you apply, you'll be asked about any adjustments you might need to support the recruitment process. Let us know, and we'll be sure to discuss it with you.

Please note: Applications will be reviewed, and interviews conducted throughout the duration of this advert, therefore we may bring the closing date forward. We encourage all interested applicants to apply as soon as possible. If you’re offered a job with us, it will be conditional, based on the passing of background checks. All roles require a criminal record check and some roles need a financial probity check. Your recruiter can provide you with more information if needed.
