Job Description

Registered Veterinary Nurse (RVN) – Thrive in a Busy Hospital Environment!

Love a varied caseload, enjoy the challenge of emergency nursing, and want to put your nursing skills to the test? Come and join our hospital team, where no two days are the same!

We have an exciting opportunity for a Registered Veterinary Nurse to join our friendly, experienced and progressive hospital team.

Working in our purpose built hospital, you’ll be involved in a diverse and often complex caseload, from emergency admissions and urgent procedures to intensive inpatient care and longer-term hospitalisation. There’s always something happening, plenty of opportunities to develop your clinical skills, and the chance to make a real difference to patients who need that extra level of care.

This is a role for an RVN who enjoys variety, thrives on teamwork and wants to be fully involved in hospital nursing. You’ll have the opportunity to work across different areas of the hospital, develop your confidence and make full use of your nursing skills in a supportive environment where learning and clinical development are encouraged.

Life in Our Hospital

We manage our own 24/7 out-of-hours service and provide OOH support for 13 other local practices. This means a varied caseload, regular emergency work and the opportunity to be involved in cases from admission through to recovery and discharge.

Our dedicated OOH team works closely with our daytime team to ensure smooth handovers and continuity of care. Our patients can remain with us for ongoing treatment and monitoring, giving you the opportunity to follow their progress and be part of their entire hospital journey.

A State-of-the-Art Hospital

Opened in October 2022, our purpose-built hospital has been designed to support an exciting and varied caseload, with excellent facilities for both patients and colleagues.

Our facilities include:

  • Three theatres for surgical procedures and emergency cases.
  • A dedicated dental suite.
  • Separate X-ray and ultrasound rooms.
  • A fully equipped treatment and laboratory room.
  • Separate dog, in patient and cat wards, with CASCO heated kennels.
  • A dedicated dog wash facility.
  • Ten consulting rooms and separate dog and cat waiting areas.
  • A dedicated Goodbye Room for compassionate end-of-life care.
  • Spacious colleague facilities, including a large break area, a quiet zone, meeting room, office space and bedrooms for OOH colleagues.
  • An outdoor grassed area where you can enjoy some fresh air during your breaks.

What Will You Be Doing?

As part of our hospital nursing team, you’ll enjoy a hands-on role with plenty of variety and opportunities to develop your clinical skills.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Delivering high-quality nursing care to a diverse caseload of hospitalised patients, including complex and critical cases.
  • Supporting emergency admissions, urgent procedures and patient triage in a busy hospital environment.
  • Assisting with surgical and emergency cases in theatre.
  • Monitoring anaesthesia and supporting safe patient recovery.
  • Providing inpatient nursing care, including ongoing monitoring, treatment and recovery.
  • Carrying out 20-minute nurse consultations, including vaccinations and medication checks.
  • Performing Schedule 3 procedures, with your skills encouraged and utilised across the hospital.
  • Working closely with veterinary surgeons, fellow nurses and support colleagues to deliver the best possible patient care.
  • Supporting continuity of care through effective communication and handovers between our daytime and dedicated OOH teams.

What Are We Looking For?

We’re looking for a Registered Veterinary Nurse who enjoys a fast-paced environment, embraces variety and is passionate about delivering excellent patient care.

You’ll ideally have:

  • A positive, proactive and team-focused attitude.
  • An interest in hospital nursing, emergency work and caring for complex cases.
  • Confidence in nurse consultations, or enthusiasm to develop your skills in this area.
  • Excellent nursing, communication and patient care skills.
  • The ability to adapt to changing priorities in a busy clinical environment.
  • Clinical Coach experience, or a willingness to undertake the training.

  • Hours: Full-time, 40 hours per week.
  • Working week: Four days 8am-7pm
  • Weekend rota: One in four weekends, covering Saturday and Sunday, with two days off during the week.
