Job Description

The Role

Are you a proactive leader with a passion for fleet operations, safety, and delivering exceptional service? We're looking for a Fleet Workshop Controller to take ownership of our workshop operations, leading a skilled team of mechanics to ensure our fleet remains safe, compliant, and available to support the vital services we provide every day.

In this key role, you'll coordinate and oversee all maintenance and repair activities, ensuring work is completed efficiently, cost effectively, and to the highest standards. You'll play a pivotal role in maintaining fleet compliance, meeting Operator Licence requirements, and ensuring adherence to all relevant fleet and Health & Safety legislation. Working closely with operational teams across the business, you'll help maximise fleet availability while providing critical support during incidents and emergencies, including the mobilisation of emergency response vehicles.

If you're a strong people leader with fleet or workshop management experience, excellent organisational skills, and a commitment to safety and continuous improvement, we'd love to hear from you. This is an opportunity to make a real impact by keeping a vital fleet operational and ready to serve our customers and communities.

What you'll be doing

  • Leading and coordinating day-to-day workshop activities, ensuring maintenance and repair work is completed safely, efficiently and on schedule.
  • Planning and allocating workshop resources, including technicians, equipment and parts, to maximise fleet availability and minimise downtime.
  • Ensuring all vehicles are maintained in line with legal, regulatory and Operator Licence requirements.
  • Managing MOT testing activities through both internal facilities and approved external providers.
  • Leading, developing and supporting a team of skilled workshop technicians to deliver high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Taking ownership of Health & Safety within the workshop, promoting a positive safety culture and ensuring compliance with company standards.
  • Providing technical guidance and support to operational teams and internal customers.
  • Supporting Transport Services projects and fleet-related initiatives across the business.
  • Owning and developing the workshop business plan, identifying opportunities to improve service, performance and cost efficiency.
  • Supporting fleet mobilisation during incidents and emergency response activities when required.

What you'll need to bring

  • Relevant experience in a vehicle maintenance, fleet or transport environment, with a strong understanding of workshop operations and fleet compliance.
  • A Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC) or equivalent transport-related qualification.
  • Good knowledge of Operator Licence requirements and the regulatory framework governing fleet operations.
  • Strong leadership skills, with the ability to motivate, develop and manage team performance.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, with the confidence to work effectively with customers, contractors and colleagues.
  • Strong planning and organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise workloads and manage competing demands.
  • Experience using fleet management and business systems, such as Tranman, SAP or similar.
  • A proven commitment to Health & Safety and the ability to promote a positive safety culture.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify opportunities and implement effective solutions.
  • Budget management experience and a commercial mindset focused on delivering value and operational efficiency.
  • The ability to plan both short and long-term activities to support fleet availability and business objectives.
