Job Description

The Role

Do you have a passion for vehicle maintenance, technical diagnostics and keeping operations moving?

Join our Transport Services team and become a key part of a workshop responsible for maintaining a fleet of more than 2,300 assets, including around 300 HGVs. As Assistant Maintenance Workshop Controller, you'll be at the heart of our operation, providing hands-on technical leadership, supporting technicians, and ensuring vehicles are prepared to the highest standards. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone who enjoys working in a busy, challenging environment and wants to make a genuine difference every day.

What we're looking for

We're looking for a proactive and technically skilled maintenance professional who thrives in a busy workshop environment. You'll be someone who takes pride in maintaining high standards of safety, compliance and fleet performance, while supporting and developing those around you. With strong diagnostic capabilities and a hands-on approach, you'll play a key role in ensuring our vehicles and equipment remain safe, reliable and ready for service.

In this role, you will:

  • Demonstrate a strong commitment to ensuring all maintenance and compliance obligations are consistently met.
  • Champion health and safety by conducting monthly workshop inspections, identifying risks and working with the Workshop Controller to implement effective solutions.
  • Carry out high-quality maintenance and repairs across a diverse fleet, including HGVs, trailers and plant equipment.
  • Help deliver excellent service performance by ensuring maintenance activities support the achievement of key operational targets and KPIs.
  • Build effective relationships with suppliers and colleagues to maintain optimal stock levels and minimise vehicle downtime.
  • Support and guide Workshop Technicians, fostering a safe, collaborative working environment while mentoring apprentices and helping to develop future talent.
  • Provide advanced technical expertise and diagnostic support, ensuring faults are identified accurately and maintenance is completed safely and efficiently.

What you'll be doing

You'll be a key technical expert within the workshop, combining hands-on maintenance expertise with diagnostic problem-solving and team support. Working across a varied fleet, you'll help ensure our vehicles and equipment remain safe, compliant and operational, while sharing your knowledge to support colleagues and apprentices.

We're looking for someone who:

  • Holds an NVQ Level 3 qualification in HGV Repair and Maintenance.
  • Is qualified as an IRTEC Vehicle Inspection Technician.
  • Demonstrative experience leading, supervising or support workshop teams, providing guidance, maintaining high standards and helping colleagues perform at their best.
  • Has extensive expertise in vehicle electrics and computer-based fault diagnostics, with the ability to identify and resolve complex technical issues.
  • Brings a collaborative approach to work, while also being confident working independently when required.
  • Is resilient, self-motivated and solutions-focused, with excellent problem-solving skills and a strong commitment to delivering high-quality work.
  • Has significant experience within a transport maintenance environment, with a thorough understanding of workshop operations and best practice.
  • Possesses proven experience maintaining and repairing a diverse range of assets, including HGVs, tankers, light commercial vehicles and plant equipment.
  • Uses their technical knowledge and practical expertise to support colleagues, improve fleet reliability and contribute to the success of the wider Transport Services team.

Benefits

  • A generous annual leave package of 26 days, which increases to 30 days after four years of service (increases one day per year), in addition to 8 bank holidays
