JOB DESCRIPTION

The Compliance and Packaging Safety Manager is responsible for ensuring that food packaging and operating supplies are safe and meet, at the minimum, all market specific regulatory requirements.

The position will support tms’s and clients’ safety & compliance strategies by maintaining and completing the material health program that enables transparency, assessment, risk management and continuous improvement for substances used in food packaging and operating supplies, that aims to drive positive change while simultaneously balancing the needs for packaging to support consumers, operations, and cost goals.

The position will provide thought leadership at tms regarding materials transparency and health; advocate and protagonist for positive change; be a resource to tms Packaging and clients; provide guidance on environmental and health impacts of substances used in packaging and recommend creative solutions with an appropriate balance of innovation, risk management, package performance, and cost.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Lead tms’s material transparency program, assessment, and continuous improvement within client’s consumer packaging portfolio in Europe, India, Middle-East, Africa (IMEA).
  • Interface directly with suppliers and material vendors to promote the vision of transparency and safety and drive selection and/ or development of materials to enable improved material health profiles for consumer packaging.
  • Assist internal customers, suppliers, and clients regarding the requirements of the Product Stewardship Compliance process.
  • Apply food safety and regulatory compliance policies in the design and rollout of new products
  • Collaborate with external testing labs to determine and implement food packaging testing
  • Support the Europe and Packaging Supplier Anticipatory Issues Management sub-team, deliverables completion, and outcomes communication.
  • Manage relationships with consultants to develop tools to manage packaging material health assessment and qualification, and understand toxicological profile of substances, including testing protocol reviews and approvals.
  • Ensure compliance with the Global Compliance & Packaging Safety (GCPS) process. Conduct and document the GCPS packaging assessments for supplier and vendor interactions. Ensure that documented processes are stored in a manner that is easily accessible to all internal collaborators.
  • Support the standardization of the GCPS process and project/s including Data/ Repository systems
  • Support the introduction of the new Spec Management System, including chemical management
  • Support STEP Workstream Legislation
  • Collaborate with suppliers, material vendors and external organizations to monitor packaging substance legislation (on Europe and IMEA level) that might impact clients.
  • Recommend creative solutions with an appropriate balance of innovation, risk management, package performance and cost.
  • Identify, assess, and report on materials, technologies, and industry trends that tms should be tracking or supporting in order to assure material health and innovative leadership positions.
  • Give excellent customer service and continuously communicate with internal customers and team members.
  • Ensure packaging standards and specifications are understood, enforced, and complied
  • Integrate the "Voice of the Customer" into packaging specifications
  • Proactively action on regulation compliance and leverage the resources & platforms to influence government on regulations and standards build-up or revision positively.
  • Establish and maintain collaborative relationships with tms internal collaborators and cross-functional resources to enable transparent and timely communication of compliance-related matters
  • Support market leads in business reviews and other relevant customer-facing opportunities to help message and articulate packaging compliance requirements
  • Contribute to DE&I by supporting DE&I events

JOB REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Sustainability and Sustainable Development, Environmental Science, Materials Science, Toxicology, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering.
  • Master’s degree preferred; individuals with relevant work experience will be considered in lieu of educational requirements.
  • 5+ years of industry experience.
  • Working knowledge of food packaging legislation with focus on EU 1935/2004, EU 10/2011, German BfR, Swiss Ordinances, Italy Decree 21/03/1973 and amendments, France Decree No 2007-766 and amendments, Dutch Commodities Act Regulation on Packaging Coming into Contact with Foodstuffs, India IS Food Contact Regulations, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Standards), and EU REACH.
  • Experience in tracking emerging issues in academia, non-governmental organizations, and the media as well as legislation that is impacting the regions ranging from small localities to federal regulation changes.
  • Additional knowledge preferred in US 21CFR, MERCUSOR, Canadian F&D Act, FSANZ, CHINA GB Standards, Japan Food Sanitation Law, Taiwan Sanitation Standard for Food Packaging and Container, and Korea Ministry of Food and Drug Safety (MFDS) Standards and Specifications for Food Containers, Utensils, and Packages.
  • Knowledge and experience with technical analysis tools and processes is a plus. Should be proficient with Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and Power Point
