Job Description

As a Compliance Technician at Tesco, you'll play a key role in helping to keep our colleagues, customers and contractors safe across one of the UK's largest and most diverse property portfolios. Working as part of the Compliance Team, you'll help ensure our sites, assets and maintenance activities remain compliant with legislation, industry standards and Tesco policies.

This is a varied and rewarding role, offering a unique mix of site-based inspections, audits, assurance activities, compliance projects and desk-based technical reviews. No two days are the same – one day you could be supporting a fire safety improvement programme, and the next reviewing statutory inspections, working with specialist contractors, or helping to shape new ways of working across the business.

You'll work closely with operational teams, contractors, industry bodies and regulatory stakeholders to drive continuous improvement and deliver practical compliance solutions. The role also provides opportunities to develop expertise across multiple compliance disciplines, including lifting equipment, fire safety, hazardous materials, pressure systems, water hygiene and statutory inspection programmes.

As part of a team that supports Distribution Centres, Retail, One Stop and Property operations nationwide, you'll have the opportunity to influence how compliance is managed across the business, helping to improve standards, processes and asset performance while ensuring Tesco remains safe, legally compliant and fit for the future.

If you're someone who enjoys solving problems, working with a wide range of stakeholders, and making a visible impact within a large and dynamic environment, we'd love to hear from you.

The hiring Manager for this role is Warren Cobb.

  • Support the team in ensuring the business meets compliance requirements across areas such as lifting equipment, fire safety, hazardous materials, pressure systems, water hygiene, LEV and statutory inspection programmes.
  • Take ownership of specific compliance areas based on your experience, with the opportunity to build skills in additional disciplines.
  • Carry out a mix of site visits, inspections, audits, assurance activities, and desk-based reviews to ensure safety, quality and compliance standards are met.
  • Support and deliver compliance projects across Distribution Centres, Retail, One Stop and Property locations.
  • Plan, coordinate and monitor statutory inspections across multiple asset groups, ensuring legal inspection requirements are completed within required timescales.
  • Review inspection findings, identify trends and support the completion of corrective actions arising from audits, inspections and compliance reviews.
  • Verify asset information and support the maintenance of accurate asset registers and compliance records.
  • Help investigate equipment issues and incidents by carrying out inspections, gathering evidence and supporting root cause analysis activities.
  • Produce clear, accurate reports, compliance updates and recommendations for senior stakeholders within agreed timelines.
  • Share technical updates and compliance guidance with operational teams, helping them understand and implement legislative and procedural changes.
  • Support the development, review and continuous improvement of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW).
  • Keep up to date with changes to legislation, regulations and Safe Systems of Work, ensuring requirements are understood and implemented.
  • Contribute to improving maintenance plans (PPMs), inspection processes and standard procedures (SOPs).
  • Manage communications and reporting linked to legally required inspections and compliance activities.
  • Monitor compliance data, KPIs and performance measures to track compliance against business and legislative requirements.
  • Full clean UK driving license.
  • Understanding of continuous improvement and how to apply it in day-to-day work.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to work effectively with operational teams, contractors, regulators and external partners.
  • Ability to analyse data and use insights to support decision making and compliance improvements.
  • Good problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Comfortable using systems and IT, including Microsoft Office.
  • Knowledge of maintenance planning, statutory inspection programmes and engineering compliance processes.
  • Awareness of governance and compliance requirements.
  • Strong organisational and planning skills with the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Experience managing and delivering legal compliance within an engineering environment (e.g. DSEAR, LOLER, PUWER, L8, PSSR, COSHH/LEV).
  • Ability to interpret and apply relevant legislation, regulations and industry standards.
  • Experience carrying out audits, inspections, compliance reviews or assurance activities.
  • Experience managing compliance records, inspection data and asset information.
  • Ability to produce clear reports and communicate technical information to a variety of audiences.
  • Engineering experience (preferred).
  • Relevant engineering qualification (preferred).
  • Good administrative skills, including use of IT systems and Microsoft Office.
  • Experience working with external regulators, industry bodies or governing organisations.
  • Ability to manage escalations from customers or stakeholders.
  • Experience in scheduling resources, planning inspections and managing workloads.
