Systems Engineer II – Infrastructure - Servers
Job Description
As a Systems Engineer II within the Booker Technology Infrastructure team, you’ll help manage and evolve our core server platforms to ensure they are reliable, secure and aligned with business needs.
You’ll work across physical, virtualised and cloud-based systems, balancing day-to-day operational support with longer-term planning and improvement. From performance optimisation and incident response through to future roadmaps and capacity planning, you’ll play a key role in keeping our infrastructure running smoothly.
Working closely with both internal colleagues and third-party partners, you’ll translate strategy into clear, actionable delivery—supporting a stable, secure platform that enables the business to grow. You’ll also contribute to service reporting, project delivery and regular Disaster Recovery and Total Loss testing, while building strong relationships with stakeholders to drive continuous improvement.
- Manage and maintain systems: Configure, monitor and optimise server infrastructure across physical, virtual and cloud environments
- Lead through collaboration: Oversee and guide primarily third-party engineering resource to deliver strong, consistent results
- Ensure operational excellence: Maintain system performance, availability, security and patching across your estate
- Deliver projects: Plan and execute infrastructure upgrades, enhancements and new implementations
- Handle incidents and change: Resolve issues quickly, minimise disruption and ensure robust change management processes
- Governance and due diligence: Maintain clear documentation, reporting and alignment with budgets and business priorities
- Drive security and compliance: Protect data, uphold security standards and maintain system integrity
- Engage stakeholders: Build strong relationships to identify improvement opportunities and support business goals
- Experience in a systems engineering or infrastructure role, ideally with a focus on server technologies
- Knowledge of server platforms across physical, virtualised and cloud environments (e.g. VMware, Unix; exposure to Nutanix, Solaris, AIX or Azure is helpful)
- Proven Linux experience
- Ideally, experience working in or managing data centre environments
- Strong understanding of incident management and recovery processes
- Solid governance, project delivery and budget management capability
- Experience working with and managing third-party vendors and resources
- Strong communication and stakeholder management skills
- A calm, practical approach to problem-solving and decision-making
- A passion for delivering stable, secure and high-performing systems
- Ability to prioritise effectively, manage dependencies and focus on outcomes
- A proactive mindset with a clear bias for action and continuous improvement
