Job Description
Design Managers at Tesco sit at the intersection of people leadership and design delivery. Your primary responsibility is building and supporting a high-performing team of designers embedded within product squads. This is a genuine management role. Your primary output is the performance, wellbeing, and development of your team, and through that, the quality of the digital experiences millions of Tesco customers interact with every week. You’ll operate in a complex product environment where clarity is often earned rather than given. A key part of your role is helping designers understand what matters, how their work connects to the wider customer journey, and what good looks like within their product area. You’ll work closely with Lead Designers who provide craft leadership across squads, ensuring that while you focus on building the team, the experience itself evolves intentionally and coherently.
You’ll manage a team of 6–9 designers across UX and UI disciplines, embedded in squads across Loyalty and Customer Support. Designers work closely with Product Managers, Engineers, and Researchers to deliver improvements to core experiences including the Tesco App, Clubcard, and Customer Support journeys. You’ll report into the Head of Design and work alongside Lead Designers and other Design and Research Managers who collectively shape how design operates across the organisation.
- Building a high-trust environment where designers can do their best work.
- Running meaningful 1:1s and supporting designers in their day-to-day challenges.
- Owning performance reviews, career conversations, and development plans.
- Identifying stretch opportunities that accelerate designer growth.
- Supporting designers through ambiguity, delivery pressure, and stakeholder complexity.
- Leading hiring processes that raise the quality bar across the organisation.
- Shaping team composition based on product needs and future capability.
- Ensuring new designers onboard successfully and quickly integrate into teams.
- Ensuring designers are embedded effectively within squads.
- Monitoring workload balance and delivery health across the team.
- Resolving resourcing challenges and delivery risks.
- Creating the conditions where high-quality design work can happen.
- Supporting design critiques and craft development alongside Lead Designers.
- Ensuring designers adopt shared tools, systems, and design standards.
- Experience managing designers in a complex digital environment.
- A strong track record of developing people rather than simply directing work.
- Enough design craft depth to give credible feedback on UX and interaction design.
- Confidence operating within large cross-functional organisations.
- Strong communication and influencing skills with product and engineering partners.
- Genuine curiosity about the people you manage and what they individually need to succeed.
