We are looking for a highly motivated HR Advisor to join our dynamic People Function, to provide guidance and support on all HR related activity to our teams across the the Northern network.

About the role: With over 7,000 people, spread across the Northern region, its important that we have a strong HR team to support the needs of management and our employees. As an integral member of the People function, you’ll work collaboratively with HR Business Partners, to support local management teams, providing assistance on people management case work, absence support and guidance on other various HR matters. You’ll also work closely with employees and union representatives to foster positive employee relations that align with Northern’s goals. In this role, you’ll will also focus your expertise on identifying and delivering localised training to help develop our management teams. If this sounds like your thing, we’d love to hear from you. Key responsibilities:
This role is a mix of diversity and complexity, ensuring that you’ll never have a dull moment. Here’s a glimpse of what your day-today activities could include:

  • Build and maintain effective relationships with department management teams, providing support in all aspects of casework and absence management while ensuring fair and lawful application of policies and procedures.
  • Coach and guide managers in people management, fostering skill development and addressing inappropriate behaviours or actions.
  • Assist managers in improving attendance by supporting with both long and short-term sickness levels within company targets, utilising available systems and management information.
  • Support managers in proactively managing employee performance, providing advice, setting clear expectations, and addressing behaviour and performance issues.
  • Assist in delivering an efficient and effective recruitment service in collaboration with the central Recruitment Team.
  • Provide regular progress updates to the HR Business Partner , highlighting risks, recommendations, and identified management development needs.
  • Support HR Business Partners in managing any employment tribunals and external party interactions as required, mitigating company impact.

About you: You’ll possess a strong passion for HR and a genuine interest in building a career in the field. You’ll understand HR principles and demonstrate a willingness to learn and grow in the role and rail industry. With your excellent communication and people management skills, you’ll be able to provide advice, guidance and support effectively and confidently to all. We’re also looking for the following: Qualifications:

  • Associate Member CIPD essential or working towards
  • Achieved or working towards CIPD Level 5 is essential, Level 7 is desirable.
  • SHL Level A qualification or equivalent or working towards

Experience:

  • HR background, with sound employment law knowledge
  • Extensive experience in absence and ER case work
  • Experience in a labour intensive and unionised environment
  • Be able to build strong working relationships with all levels of managers.
  • Demonstrates a sound understanding of employment law.
  • Previous experience of working in an advisory capacity, providing Line Manager guidance and support in line with company procedures
  • Experience of working under pressure to tight deadlines in a busy, office environment
  • IT literate, able to use Word/Excel and demonstrate attention to detail.
  • Strong team player and a good all round communicator with sound verbal and written skills
