Job Description

Applications deadline: EOD 19/07/2024

About us:

Motorway is the UK’s fastest-growing used car marketplace – our award-winning, online-only platform connects private car sellers with thousands of verified dealers nationwide, ensuring everyone gets the best deal. Founded in 2017, our technology-led approach has redefined the experience of selling a car, generating thousands of monthly car sales and helping us to grow to a team of more than 400 people across our London and Brighton offices.

About the role:

As a Lead Software Engineer, you'll be on a mission: help us create the most personalised vehicle selling and buying platform on the planet. But you won't be alone! You will work closely with engineering leaders, as well as coach and mentor other team members, to ensure the timely delivery of features and architecture changes across the teams you work with.

This is an opportunity for you to solve very interesting problems in the industry while having great impact. Help us build something no one has done before in the industry!

Responsibilities

  • Architecture Design & Implementation: Collaborate with Engineering leaders across teams to design, implement, and maintain scalable and high-performing software architectures. Leverage your experience to develop and refine asynchronous, event-driven architectures, setting standards and mentoring others on their implementation.
  • Technical Leadership: Demonstrate technical expertise in Typescript, databases, and serverless technologies within the various clouds (GCP/AWS). Guide the team through technology choices, identify potential pitfalls, and ensure the implementation of best practices.
  • Mentorship & Development: Act as an engineering role model, mentor and coach for team members, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development. Share your knowledge of software engineering patterns, practices, and advanced testing techniques (contract tests, E2E).
  • Project Leadership: Take ownership of technical projects, prioritising work, implementing solutions, and proactively communicating progress to stakeholders. Collaborate with cross-functional teams to deliver high-impact projects that advance company goals.
  • Problem-Solving & Issue Resolution: Utilise your experience to quickly assess and resolve complex technical issues. Dive into existing projects, rapidly understand their context, and offer effective solutions.
  • Stakeholder Management: Collaborate with Engineering managers, Heads of Engineering and business stakeholders to prioritise work, estimate project timelines, and manage expectations effectively.
  • Incident Response: Participate in on-call rotations and effectively respond to incidents, ensuring minimal service disruption.

Requirements

  • Proven experience designing and implementing scalable software architectures, with a focus on asynchronous, event-driven systems.
  • Proven track record of migrating legacy software to new microservices
  • Strong understanding of software engineering patterns, practices, and principles.
  • Proven track record of mentoring and guiding engineering teams.
  • Hands-on experience with serverless technologies within AWS.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven track record in technical project leadership.
