Do you want to be part of making sure people and the environment are protected from harmful chemicals? We are hiring a lawyer to be part of the Resources, Energy and Mobility System, working on projects related to Chemicals.
The role will involve analysing complex legal questions and policy scenarios and producing high-quality outputs, including public facing briefings. In particular, the Lawyer will be involved in matters relating to the implementation, enforcement and protection of the EU’s REACH Regulation, the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation and other laws relevant to the control of chemical pollution. There will be a strong focus both on carrying out advocacy with decision-makers to secure adoption of ClientEarth’s recommendations, and on providing legal support to other NGOs.
This is a new position created due to a newly received 3-year funding and will start with a defined employee contract of 12 months. We will of course inform the post holder about possible extensions to this initial 12 months ahead of time.
Meet your Manager
In this role you will be managed by Tatiana Luján. Tatiana joined ClientEarth in 2018 and is based in Brussels. Tatiana has worked in several areas whilst in ClientEarth, including marine wildlife conservation and plastic pollution.
Main duties
- Carrying out legal research evaluating potential improvements to existing laws regulating chemicals at EU and Member State level.
- With the support of senior colleagues, drafting legislative proposals and proposed amendments to primary or secondary legislation.
- Under the direction of the Systems team lead, coordinating and executing advocacy campaigns with partner NGOs. This will involve, among other tasks, the preparation of briefings explaining the benefits of particular policy choices, public speaking, media interviews, meetings with policy makers, responding to public consultations in coalition or on behalf of ClientEarth.

Role requirements
- Law degree (Essential)
- Relevant legal practice experience, which could be in a law firm but relevant experience in an inhouse role, in an NGO, public authority or academia is also valid.
- A good understanding of EU administrative law and of EU political and legislative processes
- A good understanding of EU chemical law and policy, REACH in particular (essential), and the Classification, Labelling and Packaging Regulation (desirable).
