Job Description

Join us, be part of more.

We’re so much more than an energy company. We’re a family of brands revolutionising how we power the planet. We're energisers. One team of 21,000 colleagues that's energising a greener, fairer future by creating an energy system that doesn’t rely on fossil fuels, whilst living our powerful commitment to igniting positive change in our communities. Here, you can find more purpose, more passion, and more potential. That’s why working here is #MoreThanACareer. We do energy differently - we do it all. We make it, store it, move it, sell it, and mend it.

Join a team at the heart of Centrica's data transformation journey, building the data products and platforms that power insight, customer experiences and business decision-making across the organisation. As a Data Engineer, you will design and develop scalable data solutions that underpin strategic assets such as Centrica's Single Customer View and Property View, enabling trusted, governed and accessible data for analytics, operational processes, customer engagement, AI and digital use cases across the business.

Key Accountabilities

  • Design, develop and maintain data pipelines and transformation processes within Centrica's data platform to ensure data is delivered accurately, efficiently and in line with enterprise standards

  • Build and support data engineering solutions that ingest, transform and publish data from source systems into data lakes, data warehouses and curated data products for business consumption

  • Implement and contribute to CI/CD, automation, monitoring and operational support processes to ensure data solutions are reliable, scalable and secure

  • Collaborate with platform, architecture and engineering teams to adopt data engineering best practices, improve platform capabilities and maintain alignment with enterprise technology standards

  • Investigate and resolve data quality, performance and operational issues through root cause analysis to improve stability and operational efficiency

  • Work with business stakeholders, product owners and data scientists to understand requirements and deliver data solutions that meet business objectives and user needs

  • Ensure compliance with data governance, security and regulatory requirements by following established processes, standards and controls throughout the data lifecycle

  • Maintain clear technical documentation and knowledge sharing to support operational effectiveness, solution maintainability and team collaboration

Key Competencies

The role requires strong analytical and problem-solving skills to design, develop and support data engineering solutions within established architectural standards and governance frameworks. The job holder will regularly evaluate technical options, diagnose data quality and performance issues, and determine appropriate solutions for data integration and transformation challenges.

Experience and Skills:

  • Experience in Data Engineering or a similar data-focused role

  • Strong SQL and Python development skills

  • Experience building and supporting scalable data pipelines and transformation processes

  • Hands-on experience with Apache Spark, Databricks, dbt and cloud-based data platforms

  • Good understanding of data modelling principles, data lakes and data warehouse architectures

  • Experience working with CI/CD pipelines, source control and deployment automation

  • Experience troubleshooting data quality, operational and performance issues

  • Knowledge of data governance, data quality and information security principles

  • Strong communication and stakeholder management skills

  • Ability to work collaboratively within cross-functional technology teams delivering data products and services

Essential: Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Data Engineering, Information Systems, Mathematics or a related discipline; or equivalent practical experience

Desirable: Relevant certifications in Spark, cloud technologies, data engineering or software engineering practices
