About the role

BT operates one of the UK's most critical subsea cable estates. Working within BT Subsea means contributing to the protection of the UK's domestic and international connectivity, while playing a key role in the evolution of BT's national and global network infrastructure.

BT is committed to ensuring its subsea networks remain resilient, available and ready for the future. As the Subsea Integrity & Operations Specialist, you will play a vital role in safeguarding this critical infrastructure.

You will lead day-to-day operations across BT's subsea cable systems, overseeing maintenance partners and marine repair providers while driving continuous improvement in operational performance, asset stewardship, resilience and service availability. Working at the heart of BT's subsea strategy, you will help deliver our ambitions across Operational & Maintenance Excellence, Resilience, Commercial Growth and Innovation.

The role requires a decisive technical leader, capable of balancing risk, safety, operational readiness, commercial obligations and network resilience. You will be responsible for making timely, high-quality decisions that protect critical communications infrastructure and support the connectivity relied upon by millions of customers, businesses and public services every day.

This is an opportunity to lead the operation of infrastructure that doesn't just connect networks—it connects economies, communities and nations.

The role is split between office (Bude / Ipswich / Birmingham) & field – Minimum attendance to South West for 1 week every other month + international travel potentially 4 times a year

The role requires a full UK Drivers Licence & DV Clearance eligibility

What you’ll be doing

  • Lead the operation and maintenance of BT's critical subsea cable estate, ensuring network availability, resilience and operational excellence.
  • Manage submarine cable faults, repair activities and marine interventions, coordinating suppliers, partners and stakeholders to minimise service impact.
  • Drive continuous improvement across operational processes, incident management, asset stewardship and risk management.
  • Support the development of BT's subsea resilience strategy, integrating new technologies and monitoring capabilities to enhance network protection.
  • Oversee operational governance, supplier performance, budgets and contract delivery.
  • Represent BT within industry bodies, maintenance authorities, consortia and strategic stakeholder forums.
  • Champion safe systems of work, regulatory compliance and engineering best practice.
  • Lead and inspire multidisciplinary teams, fostering a culture of accountability, collaboration and continuous improvement.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Significant experience operating critical infrastructure within telecommunications, utilities, energy, defence or similarly complex environments.
  • Strong leadership experience managing operational teams, suppliers and external partners.
  • Proven capability in incident management, operational governance, risk management and service restoration.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to influence at all levels.
  • Experience working in high-availability, safety-critical or resilience-focused operations.
  • Willingness to undertake occasional UK and international travel.

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Knowledge of subsea cable systems, landing stations, marine repair activities or telecommunications infrastructure.
  • Engineering degree or equivalent industry experience.
  • Project or programme management qualifications.
  • Offshore or maritime safety certifications.
  • Participation in relevant industry or professional bodies.

While experience in subsea telecommunications would be valuable, we're interested in your ability to lead high-performing operations, solve complex challenges, and keep critical infrastructure performing at its best.
