About the role

The Software Engineer plays an important role in supporting the development and evolution of BT’s consumer billing platforms. This role is focused on building and enhancing backend services and microservices, contributing to the delivery of new technology that improves platform capability, reliability, and customer outcomes. Working as part of a co-located FTE engineering team, the role provides the opportunity to develop strong hands-on experience in Java/Spring Boot, AWS, EKS, and Oracle DB, while learning modern engineering practices across cloud-native development and enterprise billing systems. By contributing high-quality code, supporting continuous improvement, and helping deliver resilient billing solutions, this role is key to enabling a more flexible and future-ready consumer billing estate.

What you’ll be doing

Software Development & Delivery
· Develop and enhance backend services and microservices that support consumer billing journeys, integrations, and platform improvements.
· Contribute to the delivery of new technology by writing, testing, and maintaining high-quality code within agreed engineering standards and delivery plans.
· Support build, test, deployment, and release activities to help deliver safe and reliable change across billing services.

Application Design & Engineering Practice
· Apply established engineering patterns and guidance to build Java/Spring Boot services, APIs, and integrations that are secure, supportable, and scalable.
· Contribute to solution design discussions, code reviews, and technical refinement activities as part of a wider engineering team.
· Learn and apply modern engineering practices such as microservices design, API-first development, version control, and automated testing.

Cloud Platform & Operational Support
· Support the deployment and operation of billing services in AWS and EKS, following established standards for logging, monitoring, and resilience.
· Assist with troubleshooting incidents, resolving defects, and improving service reliability in production and non-production environments.
· Contribute to CI/CD improvement, deployment automation, and operational best practice through continuous learning and hands-on support.

Data & Billing Platform Support
· Develop and maintain application components that interact with Oracle DB, following agreed patterns for data access, integrity, and performance.
· Support billing platform integrations and help maintain reliable dependencies across Oracle DB and the NetCracker RBM instance.
· Work with teammates and dependent systems to help maintain billing flows, reconciliations, and service continuity.

Collaboration & Growth
· Work closely with engineers, Product, QA, Architecture, Operations, and other teams to support delivery of billing solutions.
· Take feedback positively and use mentoring, code reviews, and day-to-day collaboration to grow technical capability and confidence. · Contribute to a customer-focused, delivery-driven, and one-team culture by being committed, clear, and connected in how you work.
