Job Description

Job Req ID: 58952

Closing Date: 1st June

Location: Manchester or London

About the role

Known internally as Etc., we’re BT Group’s innovation engine, accelerating exploration and early-stage product development with a start-up mindset to help BT embrace a culture of learning and evidence-led decisions.

BT’s Developer Solutions ambition is to make it easy for external developers and partners to discover, test, onboard and scale with BT APIs and platform capabilities across BT brands, and to turn that into repeatable commercial value.

This role is pivotal in shifting from “feature delivery” to outcome-led product management: owning the problem space, defining strategy and measurable outcomes, and leading discovery and decision-making across an empowered Product–Design–Engineering trio.

You will shape a developer-first experience that supports the end-to-end partner journey, from exploration and sandbox testing to production access and onboarding workflows, while improving the operational efficiency and customer experience that APIs enable (e.g., automated ordering journeys)

The BT API developer experience includes a portal showcasing APIs across BT brands with products, documentation and case studies designed to help partners take projects “from idea to reality”. It also includes a structured onboarding journey: explore products and documentation, register and create sandbox apps, develop and test using sandbox credentials, then move to production access once contractual terms are in place.

This role is suited to a Senior Product Manager with experience in platform, API or developer‑facing products, who is comfortable operating in ambiguity, leading through influence, and owning outcomes over delivery.

What you’ll be doing

You are accountable for product direction, prioritisation and outcome performance for Developer Solutions, while working through influence across platform, engineering, commercial and operational teams.

  • Own the vision, strategy and outcomes for Developer Solutions: Own the product vision and strategy for Developer Solutions, translating partner/developer needs into a clear roadmap and measurable outcomes (adoption, activation, efficiency, commercial impact)
  • Lead the end-to-end developer/partner journey
    • Vision, design, improve and scale the customer journey across the four key onboarding stages: explore APIs, register & sandbox, develop & test, and go-live/production access
    • Reduce time-to-value for developers (e.g., time to first successful call, faster onboarding and approvals) by optimising documentation, workflows and support pathways
  • Drive continuous discovery, learning and evidence-led decisions
    • Run continuous discovery with Product Experience Design and Engineering: research, data analysis and experimentation to validate problems and solutions before scaling investment
    • Use AI-enabled approaches to accelerate insight synthesis and learning cycles, while keeping decisions grounded in evidence and customer outcomes. Note - This role does not require building AI models, but does expect confident use of AI to improve product discovery, decision‑making and delivery effectiveness.
  • Build a world-class API product and platform capability
    • Shape how APIs are presented, discovered and used: clear product propositions, reference documentation, and “getting started” guidance that supports real integrations.
    • Partner with API/platform teams to ensure strong API quality signals (reliability, versioning, usability), and consistency across sandbox and production experiences.
  • Enable partner automation and self-serve outcomes (including ordering journeys)
    • Work with stakeholders to ensure APIs deliver tangible partner outcomes: reduced manual tasks, better order journeys, earlier data verification, and self-serve capability.
  • Commercialise responsibly (monetisation, governance, trust)
    • Shape and evolve the product‑led commercial operating model for Developer Solutions including scalable onboarding and access patterns and (where relevant) monetisation constructs (e.g., rate plans / controlled access patterns) that reduce friction and overhead.
    • Champion customer trust, responsible data use, and compliance-aligned product practices across the developer ecosystem.
  • Lead through influence; uplift product practice
    • Align stakeholders across Product, Engineering, Commercial and Operations through clear narratives, transparent trade-offs and measurable progress.
    • Role model modern, outcome-led product management and help embed discovery, experimentation and evidence-led governance
    • Coach and develop product talent, raising capability across discovery, decision‑making and outcome ownership.
  • Measures of success:
    • Improved developer activation and API adoption
    • Reduced time to value
    • Increased self‑serve journeys and reduced manual effort
    • Clear roadmap and commercial growth
  • Vision, design, improve and scale the customer journey across the four key onboarding stages: explore APIs, register & sandbox, develop & test, and go-live/production access
