Function: Service

Location: Birmingham Snowhill (3 days a week)

Salary: Competitive + excellent benefits

About the role

Join the wider Service Architecture & AI team and play a key role in supporting and maintaining the HMRC network, with a particular focus on monitoring, alerting and automation capabilities. You’ll use your network engineering expertise to investigate and resolve complex incidents, maintain and develop lab environments, and identify improvements that make services more efficient and effective. This is an opportunity to take real technical ownership, working with internal teams, service management and third-party partners to enhance and evolve a critical network environment and to gain experience in developing network automation and tooling.

The successful candidate must be eligible for, and able to obtain and maintain, SC UK Government Security Clearance.

What you’ll be doing

  • Provide network and lab support across the HMRC network estate, supporting multiple monitoring and automation products and network virtualisation technologies such as EVE-NG and CML.
  • Lead technical investigations allocated by the Tooling Manager, applying effective troubleshooting and problem-solving to support resolution.
  • Support the transition of new project implementations and designs into live service, ensuring solutions are ready for operational support.
  • Act as a Technical Authority, reviewing proposed network changes to maintain quality, identify risk and support effective implementation.
  • Drive Continual Service Improvement, working collaboratively with HMRC and supplier teams while adhering to relevant BT and HMRC policies, standards and directives.

Essential Skills / Experience

  • Experience in an enterprise network engineering/support environment, with hands-on expertise in network troubleshooting, packet analysis and Root Cause Analysis (RCA).
  • CCNP qualified, with solid technical knowledge of enterprise networking and experience supporting and configuring complex network environments.
  • Experience providing technical leadership, taking ownership of technical issues and working autonomously and collaboratively to resolve complex network problems

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience with Network Performance Monitoring and Diagnostics (NPMD) tooling, such as Netscout, including the support and configuration of monitoring solutions.
  • Exposure to network automation and scripting, including Python, PowerShell or cURL, and technologies such as Ansible, GitLab and CI/CD pipelines.
