As a Senior Competition Lawyer, you will provide specialist and strategic legal advice across a broad range of competition and regulatory matters. You will work on complex issues spanning advisory, investigations, litigation, compliance, merger-related activity, and policy development, while helping the business navigate regulatory considerations in a commercially practical way.

You will join a specialist legal team that values high-quality judgment, collaboration, and curiosity. The team works across a varied and intellectually demanding mix of matters and looks for lawyers who are interested not only in the legal analysis, but also in the wider policy context and BT’s broader strategic direction.

What you’ll be doing

- Advise on a wide spectrum of competition and regulatory matters across the business including competition and regulatory policy development, behavioural advice, compliance, investigations, litigation, and merger activity, identifying and developing ways in which competition and regulatory law can be used to develop, enable and protect BT’s strategic agenda.

- Engage with external stakeholders including customers, Ofcom and competition authorities in relation to competition and regulatory law matters.

- Provide training, education and awareness activities for colleagues in across BT as well as developing and contributing to best practice documents on competition law and regulation, including building on lessons learnt

- Build effective relationships with internal stakeholders and support sound decision-making through commercially focused legal advice.

- Provide guidance and mentoring to junior lawyers, with likely line management responsibility for at least one or more junior team member.

Essential Skills / Experience

- Expert in competition law law with overall broader legal knowledge (commercial, corporate governance, litigation etc.) and strong understanding of how legal issues affect organisations.

- Qualified lawyer with appropriate professional registration - 6yrs PQE + with substantial knowledge and relevant experience in the legal profession, covering a broad range of activities, with strong experience gained in a legal or commercial environment (in particular law firm, barristers’ chambers, in-house team, competition or regulatory authority, relevant courts).

- Capable of translating complex legal issues in clear, accessible terms and practical guidance for business stakeholders.

- Ability to influence at all levels of the business including at senior level (up to CEO), with strong written and verbal communication and presentation skills.

- Strong commercial sense, in particular being able to understand complex markets, identifying key relevant dynamics and commercial goals and thinking creatively to meet those goals whilst assessing the relative risk of different propositions and solutions.

Desirable Skills / Experience

- Experience in advising in telecoms and/or other regulated sectors, and knowledge of pay TV services, mobile regulation and broadcasting is a plus.

- Experience of an inhouse legal role in a complex business structure.

- Experience of managing direct reports: identifying skill and resource gaps, empowering and coaching individuals to improve performance and implant best practice.
