About the role

ETC field engineers support the practical delivery, installation, testing, and sustainment of emerging and specialist technologies as they move from development into trial, pilot, and operational use.

The role contributes to innovation outcomes by ensuring that technologies are engineered, deployed, and supported in real‑world environments, providing feedback that informs feasibility, performance, and future scaling decisions. This position works across a broad range of technologies that BT is involved in, which may include networking, communications platforms, sensing and security technologies, drones and counterdrone systems, and other experimental or earlystage capabilities.

What you’ll be doing

  • Deliver field‑based installation, configuration, testing, and commissioning of specialist and emerging technology systems
  • Support trials, pilots, demonstrations, and proof‑of‑capability activities linked to innovation programmes
  • Diagnose and resolve system, network, and equipment faults during trial and operational phases
  • Carry out preventative and corrective maintenance on deployed systems
  • Conduct site surveys, system validation, and acceptance testing
  • Capture technical results, issues, and observations to support iteration and improvement
  • Maintain accurate technical documentation, reports, and handover materials, advocate BT’s “Just Culture” by maintaining and improving our safety management systems
  • Work with external technology suppliers and delivery partners to support configuration, fault resolution, and technical alignment
  • Operate within defined Field Engineering standards, safety frameworks, and governance processes. Documenting new safety processes as we evolve our products.
  • Define and create new engineering and safety processes for pioneering new technology in line with BT’s “Just Culture”
  • Collaborate with engineering, programme, and innovation teams across BT
  • Support the transition of technologies from incubation into wider operational use
  • Escalate technical, safety, or delivery risks through agreed engineering routes

Essential Skills / Experience

Candidates MUST have a Full UK driving licence and Eligibility to obtain UK Security Clearance (SC)

  • Experience in field engineering, systems integration, or technical installations
  • CAA‑recognised drone pilot qualification and significant experience
  • Strong fault‑finding and troubleshooting capability across hardware and software systems
  • Ability to work safely and effectively in regulated, secure, or controlled environments

Desirable Skills / Experience

  • Experience working with emerging or experimental technologies
  • Exposure to counter‑drone systems, sensing, security, or surveillance platforms
  • Practical experience operating drones as part of testing, trials, or technical evaluation activities
  • Experience supporting pilot, proof‑of‑concept, or innovation environments
  • Experience in training or presenting demonstrations
  • Strong focus on safety, compliance, and engineering quality
  • Willingness to travel regularly within the UK, with occasional overseas travel
  • Understanding of installation, maintenance, and quality assurance processes
  • Experience working with technical suppliers or third‑party vendors
