UK Intelligence Services

Thinking about a career with the UK's Intelligence Services?

While each agency has its own focus, we're united by a shared mission: to protect the UK from threats such as terrorism, cyber-crime and espionage. Its a purpose that bring people from all walks of life together and gives us a real sense of pride in what we do.

MI5 keeps the country safe from serious threats like terrorism and attempts by states to harm the UK, its people and way of life. We carryout investigations by obtaining, analysing and assessing intelligence, and then work with a range of partners, to disrupt these threats.

MI6, also known as SIS, protects the security and economic wellbeing of the UK from overseas threats such as regional instability, terrorism, and cyber-attacks. Using innovative technologies, we work across the globe developing foreign contacts who can help the UK government counter these threats, through the provision of secret intelligence.

GCHQ is an intelligence, cyber and security agency with a mission to keep the UK safe.
We use cutting-edge technology, ingenuity and partnerships to identify, analyse and disrupt threats. Working with our intelligence partners, we protect the UK from terrorism, cyber-attacks and espionage.

And together, we form the UK’s Intelligence Services.

Flexible working at UK Intelligence Services

One of the most common misconceptions about working at MI5, MI6 and GCHQ is that it means long hours and little time for life outside of work. Most of our people work regular 36 or 37-hour weeks.

We place real value on helping our people maintain a healthy work-life balance because this is key to making a robust and healthy workforce. Due to the sensitive nature of our work, home working
isn’t always an option, but we offer a wide range of flexible working options to help you balance your personal and professional lives.

Whether you’re managing family commitments, pursuing hobbies or simply want more control over your day, we’ll help you find a rhythm that works for you and meets the requirements of the role.

Here’s a flavour of what we offer (though they may vary by role, so always check the job description):

  • 🧘Flexitime: manage your contracted hours with greater autonomy and flexibility.
  • 📆Compressed hours: work your usual hours over fewer days, for example a four-day week or nine-day fortnight, with no reduction in pay.
  • 🍃Part-time working: we’ll work with you to agree a pattern of reduced hours that fits your life and working responsibilities.
  • 🤝Job share: split a full-time role with another colleague, sharing duties and responsibilities.
  • ⏱️Time off in lieu: if you work extra hours, you’ll get that time back.

UK Intelligence Services's mission, purpose and values

Whilst we each have a slightly different focus, our collective mission is the same: to keep the UK’s people, businesses and interests safe from threats including terrorism, espionage, organised crime and cyber-crime. There are many areas where we work in close partnership with each other, sharing intelligence, resources and operational strategies.

It's no exaggeration to say that collaboration is vital to our success. Whether that’s colleagues focused on a project or agencies partnering to carry out wider operations, sharing information, ideas and insights is essential.

We’re proud to have a culture where everyone’s encouraged to contribute. You might be fresh out of school or bringing decades of expertise to a new challenge; we know the best solutions are found when everyone feels comfortable sharing new perspectives. By working together, we’re able to unlock intelligence, decode puzzles, keep projects on track, and stay one step ahead.

But there’s more to working here than the mission alone.

We’re proud to offer a workplace where people feel supported, valued and able to bring their whole selves to work. That means a strong focus on wellbeing, more flexibility than you might expect, and an inclusive, equitable environment backed by a generous benefits package.

“The culture in this organisation is what makes it stand out. It has a real focus on work-life balance and puts so much emphasis on creating a workplace that is welcoming and inclusive. It’s embedded into everything that we do.”

“The flexitime policy has been a game-changer for me. I can come in at 7am and leave at 3pm, which suits my schedule perfectly.”

“With proven practices and a team that truly understands the challenges we face, wellbeing is not just a priority, it's part of how we work.”

“There are support systems in place to help people from all backgrounds feel valued and heard. There are various women’s networks and Women in Tech/Data events designed to support and empower women in their careers. There’s also a dedicated group for people of colour, offering guidance on topics like career progression or navigating challenges in the workplace.”

“I’ve been so aware of the efforts going in to ensuring everyone’s physically, mentally and emotionally well. It’s not a case of being stoic and soldiering on, it’s an open and honest environment where we’re able to talk to each other when we’re struggling. Like any job there’s stressful days, but there’s an incredibly healthy work-life balance that I didn’t expect at all.”

“I have to hide what I do – but not who I am. I recently came out as trans, and my colleagues were great at taking time to understand what that meant for me. As part of the LGBTQ+ network, I even ran a myth-busting session discussing terminology and our community. There’s lots of LGBTQ+ and minority groups and the services really are focused on making this as inclusive a place to work as possible.”
