Junior Data Scientist
Job Description
We’re Atom…
The bank that’s on a mission to make finance faster, simpler and way more human.
We’ve ditched the stuffy banking model to build something that actually works for our customers, whenever and wherever they need us.
To make this happen, we’re looking for like-minded people who can help us reach our goals and think differently.
If you’re ready to build the future of banking, we’d love to meet you.
What will your typical day look like? Different that’s for sure…
As part of our AI & Data Science team, you’ll spend your days tackling real-world banking challenges. You will collaborate closely with teams across the bank and external data partners to build, refine, and monitor predictive, behavioral, and simulation models that directly shape strategies in pricing, marketing, product optimisation, and fraud detection.
A typical day sees you pulling and analysing datasets using Python and SQL, utilising cutting-edge AI tools like GitHub Copilot or Claude to write and test efficient code, and participating in peer reviews to keep model quality high. You’ll regularly step away from the code to translate complex data findings into simple, actionable insights, presenting your work to both technical teammates and non-technical business leaders across the organisation.
So, what will you be doing…
Modelling & Delivery
- Developing and implementing predictive, behavioral, and simulation models, customer segmentation strategies, and optimisation algorithms to drive pricing decisions and quantify operational risks.
Stakeholder & Business Impact
- Delivering end-user solutions and interactive tools that allow internal stakeholders to run “what-if” scenario analyses and explore data trends.
Reporting & Analysis
Building ad-hoc reports and automating regularly scheduled, repeatable data workflows using CI/CD pipelines and cloud-run processes.
Monitoring and maintaining models over time so they remain accurate, effective, and fully compliant with regulatory requirements (such as GDPR).
Conducting hypothesis testing, exploratory data analysis, and supporting high-profile strategic initiatives across the Transformation Office to deliver tangible business value.
Peer Review & Quality
- Providing constructive challenge and peer reviews for models and analyses built by fellow team members to ensure technical rigor.
What do we need from you…
A degree in a numerate discipline (e.g., Maths, Statistics, Economics, or similar) or comparable experience working as a data scientist or analyst.
Practical experience using Python for Data Science, data manipulation packages (like pandas), and SQL for data retrieval.
A good understanding of core machine learning techniques (e.g. neural networks, regression, SVMs, decision trees/random forests) and basic statistical concepts like A/B testing.
Experience using AI tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, Codex, Claude) to write code and documentation efficiently, plus familiarity with data privacy standards like GDPR.
Excellent communication skills to present to both technical and non-technical stakeholders, combined with a self-starter attitude and a desire to learn.
What will you get from us?
- Salary of £33,750.
- Flexible hybrid working in Newcastle
- 4-day work week
- Discretionary Cash Bonus – Individual and Company Performance based.
- Incredibly generous company pension scheme (maximum of 13% of Atom input – you can put in more).
- ‘All About Me’ fund: £200 per year to spend on personal development.
- 22.5 days annual leave plus public holidays.
- Private Medical Insurance, Health Cash Plan & Life Insurance.
- Electric Vehicle Scheme.
