Job Description

Most insurance companies build products around policies. We're building ours around people.

You’ll help build an Android experience that feels effortless, valuable and useful for young drivers, connecting customers with insights, rewards and services that make insurance helpful every day, not just when something goes wrong.

As Senior Android Engineer, you’ll own significant features end to end, influence technical direction to create high quality, scalable mobile products.

Why this role matters

Our Android app is a core part of Veygo’s next stage of growth. It needs to be fast, reliable and simple to use, supported by robust architecture and engineering practices that can scale.

You’ll be involved from discovery through to delivery, helping shape product direction, make architecture decisions and solve complex technical problems. Working in a cross functional squad alongside Product Managers, Designers, Backend Engineers and QA Engineers, you’ll use customer feedback and data to guide decisions, release frequently and improve the experience over time.

You’ll also help shape how we adopt AI assisted and agentic engineering practices, coaching others to use modern tools while maintaining high standards for quality, maintainability and customer outcomes.

What you’ll be responsible for

  • Lead the architecture and delivery of complex Android features across data modelling, networking, caching, offline behaviour and sync.
  • Build high quality mobile experiences using Kotlin, Jetpack Compose and modern Android architecture.
  • Work closely with Product, Design, Backend Engineering and QA from discovery through to delivery, shaping the Android roadmap and the APIs behind it.
  • Make technical decisions that balance performance, scalability, maintainability and customer experience.
  • Mentor engineers, provide thorough code reviews and improve tooling, release cadence and developer experience.
  • Use AI assisted and agentic engineering tools to improve delivery, helping the team adopt them confidently without lowering standards.

What you’ll bring

  • Proven experience as an Android engineer, with a significant portion at senior level in fast paced, consumer focused companies.
  • A track record of delivering and scaling Android applications with a large user base.
  • Strong proficiency in Android, Kotlin and Jetpack Compose, with a deep understanding of Android frameworks and APIs.
  • Experience architecting and implementing complex mobile applications.
  • Strong experience with CI/CD and frequent releases.
  • Experience using AI assisted development tools such as Claude Code, Cursor or similar.
  • Excellent problem solving and debugging skills, with a commitment to clean, efficient and maintainable code.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to discuss interaction design, API schemas and architecture decisions across disciplines.
  • A customer focused approach, connecting technical decisions to real customer problems and better experiences.
  • Leadership instincts, with the confidence to challenge assumptions, identify opportunities, mentor others and take projects through to completion.

Our technology

  • Language and UI: Kotlin, Jetpack Compose.
  • Architecture: Modern modular Android architecture, coroutines and Flow.
  • CI/CD and release: CircleCI, Firebase App Distribution and Google Play.
  • Quality: Automated unit and UI testing, with BrowserStack for device coverage.
  • Observability: New Relic and Firebase Crashlytics.
  • AI assisted engineering: Claude Code and other emerging agentic tooling.

Why Veygo?

At Veygo, we’re here to unlock independence.

For young drivers, getting on the road is a massive life moment freedom, confidence, responsibility, and finally not needing a lift everywhere. For parents, it’s a big moment too: letting go, while knowing their child is protected and supported.

We make insurance the easy bit.

Since launching in 2016, we’ve helped more than one million customers and sold over eight million policies by making car insurance simpler, more flexible and built around real life. Now, we’re evolving from short term cover into a brand that supports young drivers through their first years on the road helping them build safer habits, manage costs and move forward with confidence.

Backed by Admiral Group, we combine scale up energy with the strength, trust and expertise of one of the UK’s leading insurers. Our teams get the freedom to experiment, the ownership to make things happen and the platform to build products that reach millions.

If you want to solve real customer problems, work with smart cross functional teams and help shape the future of insurance for young drivers, you’ll fit right in.

What you'll get in return

We believe exceptional people do their best work when they're trusted, supported and rewarded. Alongside a competitive salary, you'll receive a benefits package designed to help you grow your career, share in our success and maintain a healthy work life balance.

Highlights include:

  • A generous share scheme, giving you the opportunity to become a shareholder and share in Admiral's success.
  • 33 days' holiday, including bank holidays, increasing with service, plus the option to buy or sell up to five additional days.
  • Ongoing learning and development, leadership programmes and opportunities to grow your career across Admiral Group.
  • Flexible hybrid working, with most colleagues spending one or two days a week in our Central Cardiff office.
  • A people first culture recognised as a Great Place to Work for more than 25 years, including awards for Wellbeing and Women.
