Project Manager - Onshore Wind

Job Description

We are now looking for either a Project Manager or a Senior Project Manager for our Onshore Wind department who will be primarily engaged in the development phase of Onshore Wind projects. The role sits within the Market Development UK team.

Your role / what will you do?

During the development phase, the Project Manager will execute project development activities by taking a senior role in the management, identification and development of wind farm projects from feasibility to financial close in a cost effective, safe and timely manner to achieve pre-defined company targets. Your work will concern a wide range of project activities, leading onshore wind development projects to a positive investment decision.

Beyond the development phase and the investment decision, some support to the construction phase team may well be necessary to ensure commitments and obligations made by Vattenfall during the development phase are delivered on.

You may also be asked to contribute towards other related initiatives within Vattenfall, such as our approach to strategy or communications and stakeholder engagement.

Responsibilities:

  • Driving projects forwards to successful conclusions
  • The management, identification and development of wind farm projects from feasibility to financial close in a cost effective, safe and timely manner to achieve pre-defined company targets
  • Ensure that project goals are well defined, communicated and achieved
  • Ensure the project methods are well defined, communicated and achieved
  • Ensure that the project organisations are well defined, communicated and achieved
  • Create the plan and timeline for projects
  • Monitor and report on progress
  • Manage and report on the budget
  • Identify and minimise risks
  • Identify and secure opportunities
  • Obtain the necessary resource to deliver the projects in accordance with the project goals

1. Governance and Reporting

  • Monthly Reporting: Provide regular updates to the sponsor and Vattenfall governance, ensuring transparency on project status.
  • Project Tools Maintenance: Ensure project management tools (budget, schedules, and commentaries) are up-to-date, utilizing specialist support if available.

2. Strategic Advisory Role

  • Industry Insight: Possess a strong understanding of the UK renewables sector to offer strategic advice beyond individual project details.

3. Stakeholder and Communication Management

  • External Relations: Build and maintain strong relationships with external stakeholders.
  • Public and Regulatory Affairs: Collaborate with teams to handle public relations and regulatory matters in the UK.

4. Environmental and Planning Compliance

  • EIA and Planning: Ensure that Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and planning applications are comprehensive and meet the requirements of consenting authorities.

5. Land and Grid Management

  • Land Rights: Secure necessary land rights (Access Agreements, Options, Leases) to ensure smooth project construction and operation.
  • Grid Connection: Identify and secure agreements for grid connections essential for project viability.

6. Technical Development

  • Wind Resource Process: Ensure thorough evaluation of wind resources, optimizing project output.
  • Design and Safety Compliance: Incorporate design considerations with a focus on health, safety, and environmental sustainability.

7. Post-FID Support

  • Construction Support: Provide ongoing assistance during construction phases, ensuring compliance with consents and leveraging historical project knowledge.

8. International Collaboration

  • Cross-Country Coordination: Collaborate with internal teams across Vattenfall’s core regions (Sweden, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany) to align on best practices and resources.

Qualifications

Essential skills and experience include:

  • A university degree in science, engineering or other relevant university degree.If you do not possess a degree then suitable alternative experiences and qualifications should be demonstrated.
  • Experience of leading and managing wind farm projects during the development phase including activities associated with permitting, land rights, wind resource, site design and grid connections
  • Experience of sourcing renewable energy development sites
  • Experience of creating and maintaining relationships with stakeholders
  • Strong understanding of health and safety responsibilities of developers and the implications of development activities on future construction and operation activities
  • Good commercial acumen and sound financial understanding
  • Strong sense of integrity
  • Excellent communication skills and an ability influence and lead others
  • Ability to adapt to tight deadlines, heavy workloads and changes in priorities
  • Able to work in a team and build up strong relationships

Desirable (“good to have”)

  • Experience and knowledge of ‘route to market’ activities and methods (e.g. Corporate PPAs or Contracts for Difference)
  • Particular knowledge of either grid regulation, land negotiations, or CfDs
  • Experience and knowledge of UK electricity market industry issues
  • Experience in large-scale / complex construction projects (e.g. energy, infrastructure)
  • Experience of working cross-culturally and across global locations
  • Procurement experience with industry standard construction contracts (e.g. FIDIC)
  • Experience in using industry standard construction contracts during project execution phase
  • Practical qualifications of a professional standard in science or engineering.
  • Project Management qualifications are desirable.
