We're looking for an experienced Product Owner (Metering) to take ownership of the digital products and systems that underpin our metering operations. This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with a strong metering background, product ownership experience, and a passion for delivering meaningful change through technology.

You'll become the business champion for our metering products, ensuring they meet the needs of both our colleagues and customers while driving performance, innovation, and continuous improvement.

What you'll be doing

As Product Owner, you'll be accountable for the functional requirements, development roadmap, and ongoing performance of our metering products. Working closely with operational teams, stakeholders, technology partners, and suppliers, you'll ensure our systems continuously evolve to deliver better outcomes.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Owning and prioritising the metering product backlog in line with business objectives and customer needs.
  • Working directly with business users and metering leadership teams to design, develop, test and implement new functionality.
  • Leading sprint planning and supporting agile delivery teams to ensure value is delivered quickly and effectively.
  • Acting as the subject matter expert for metering products and associated business processes.
  • Managing product-related incidents, defects and enhancements, ensuring issues are prioritised and resolved effectively.
  • Driving continuous improvement by identifying opportunities to enhance product functionality and user experience.
  • Supporting the implementation and evolution of smart metering capabilities.
  • Building strong relationships across Metering, Technology, Customer and Operational teams to understand priorities and challenges.
  • Gathering, documenting and translating business requirements into clear functional solutions.
  • Identifying and mitigating product risks while ensuring governance and compliance requirements are met.
  • Measuring and reporting on business benefits delivered through product enhancements and change initiatives.
  • Acting as the key liaison between project delivery teams, support functions, third-party suppliers and business stakeholders.
  • Driving system adoption by understanding user needs, eliminating operational pain points and promoting best practice.

What we're looking for

We're seeking someone who combines strong product ownership capability with in-depth metering knowledge and excellent stakeholder management skills.

You'll ideally have:

Essential experience

  • Proven experience as a Product Owner, Product Manager or similar digital product role.
  • Strong background within the metering industry.
  • Experience delivering change and driving the performance of digital products.
  • Experience gathering, analysing and documenting business requirements.
  • Excellent stakeholder management skills with the ability to build trusted relationships across multiple business areas.
  • Experience prioritising competing demands and influencing decision-making.
  • Knowledge of Agile methodologies and sprint planning.
  • Experience managing product incidents, defects and risks through to resolution.
  • Ability to translate business needs into clear and actionable product solutions.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to engage technical and non-technical audiences alike.

Desirable experience

  • Salesforce experience.
  • Experience supporting or delivering smart metering implementations.
  • Experience working with third-party technology suppliers.
  • Experience leading product innovation and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Experience mentoring, coaching or developing others.
  • Degree-level qualification or equivalent experience.

Why United Utilities?
