Job Description

United Utilities’ Energy Generation team is seeking a skilled and motivated Field Service Engineer with a strong electrical background to support the performance and reliability of our renewable and low carbon energy assets.

In this hands-on role, you will work with advanced technologies including combined heat and power engines, gas-to-grid systems, and associated plant equipment. You will play a key part in ensuring these assets remain safe, efficient, and dependable, directly contributing to sustainable energy production.

This is a varied and dynamic position where you will be responsible for diagnostics, maintenance, and continuous improvement activities across innovative energy systems. You will work both independently and as part of a collaborative team, while also supporting apprentices and contractors to build capability and maintain high standards. You will be part of a forward-thinking environment, with ongoing training and development to support your growth within the renewable energy sector.

Key Accountabilities

  • Deliver planned preventative and reactive maintenance that maximises asset reliability and keeps critical systems running at peak performance
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues using control systems, alarms, and advanced testing tools to restore operations quickly and effectively
  • Partner with site operations teams to ensure energy generation aligns seamlessly with operational demands
  • Uphold the highest standards of safety and compliance, working in line with statutory regulations, BS 7671, and company procedures
  • Take part in an on call rota, responding confidently to breakdowns and urgent situations to maintain continuity of service

Knowledge & Skills

You will be a qualified electrical professional who brings both strong technical expertise and a proactive, solutions-focused approach.

  • Completed a recognised electrical apprenticeship or hold an equivalent qualification, ideally supported by ONC or HNC credentials
  • Currently working in an electrical engineering, maintenance, or service based role with a strong electrical foundation
  • Experienced in working with LV and ELV systems, with exposure to HV systems and power generation environments highly advantageous
  • Confident working with industrial control systems, including panels, relays, and basic PLC diagnostics
  • Skilled across a range of voltage systems including 24 volt DC, and 110 volt, 230 volt, and 400 volt AC
  • Strong fault finding capability across electrical and control systems, with a methodical and analytical approach
  • Knowledge of generator systems and standby power equipment, with practical exposure highly valued
  • Understanding of internal combustion engines in an industrial setting, particularly four stroke engines
  • Well versed in safe systems of work, including RAMS, isolation procedures, and statutory compliance requirements
  • Proactive and adaptable with excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively both independently and within a team
  • Full UK driving licence, enabling travel across sites in the North West

Why This Role

This is an excellent opportunity to build your expertise in energy generation while working with innovative, sustainable technologies. You will gain hands-on experience with cutting-edge assets, contribute to meaningful environmental outcomes, and benefit from ongoing training and development within a supportive and progressive team.
