Job Description

At Booker, we’re proud to support customers and communities across the UK — and our technology helps make that possible every single day. As a Network Systems Engineer I, you’ll help keep our core network secure, stable, and performing at its best across our stores, distribution centres, and offices.

You’ll be involved in day‑to‑day operations, incident resolution, and ongoing improvements that help colleagues work more efficiently. Working with Booker IT teams, Tesco Technology partners, external suppliers, and our Service Desk, you’ll play an important role in ensuring our network services are reliable, compliant, and aligned with business needs.

Because of the systems you’ll support, there may be times when you’re needed outside normal working hours as part of an out‑of‑hours escalation rota. If you enjoy problem‑solving, teamwork, and making a meaningful impact across a nationwide network, this could be a great fit for you.

  • Support network projects across both branch and corporate environments, contributing to successful delivery.
  • Assist with daily network operations to maintain stability, availability, and security.
  • Install, configure, patch, and support network hardware and operating systems in line with our layered defence standards.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network and system issues, including hardware, software, and configuration faults.
  • Work with third‑party suppliers to diagnose issues, replace equipment, and implement effective fixes.
  • Support colleagues with network‑related queries, both remotely and in person.
  • Maintain accurate documentation such as network topology, project records, and support notes.
  • Produce reports, KPIs, and management information as required.
  • Follow change management and system security processes, ensuring compliance with contracts and licensing.
  • Support disaster‑recovery testing and help review and manage risks.
  • Identify recurring issues, suggest improvements, and support implementation of approved changes.
  • Work with Desktop and Applications teams on patching and connectivity needs.
  • Deputise for the Lead Engineer when required.
  • Knowledge of network connectivity methods, routers, switches, and access points.
  • Experience supporting network systems in a production environment.
  • Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills, with the ability to diagnose and resolve faults.
  • An understanding of service management, change‑control processes, and operational support.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to prioritise work effectively.
  • Clear, confident communication skills and the ability to work well with colleagues, customers, and suppliers.
  • The ability to adapt to change and stay calm under pressure.
  • A positive, proactive mindset with a desire to learn and contribute.
  • A focus on system stability, availability, security, and best practice.
  • Strong collaboration skills and attention to detail.
  • A valid Full UK Driving Licence.
