Job Description
As our Lifts, Escalators & Travelators Maintenance Technical Manager, you�ll be accountable for advancing the People Moving Equipment (PME) maintenance discipline across our retail estate. You�ll ensure the safe, compliant and cost effective management of all PME�covering passenger lifts, goods lifts, escalators, travelators, control systems and associated safety equipment.
You�ll provide technical leadership and expert support to our field teams, helping us maintain a safe, legally compliant and operationally reliable estate for customers, colleagues and stakeholders. This is a role where your engineering expertise directly shapes safety, service quality and the experience of millions of people who use our stores every week.
This is a National based role and the Hiring Manager is Daniel Villiers.
Technical Leadership & Discipline Ownership
Own and lead the PME maintenance discipline strategy, setting national technical standards, governance frameworks and best practice processes.
Act as the subject matter expert for all lifts, escalators, travelators and associated systems�providing authoritative engineering decisions and escalation support.
Develop and deliver the annual PME Discipline Improvement Plan, driving innovation, technical excellence and service improvements across the estate.
Compliance, Safety & Assurance
Ensure full statutory and regulatory compliance across all PME assets, including LOLER, PUWER, EN81, EN115, BS7255, BS5900 and SAFed guidance.
Maintain clear visibility of risk, presenting compliance status and corrective action plans to senior stakeholders.
Ensure high professional standards in the execution and close out of all planned and reactive work, meeting internal governance and external statutory requirements.
Performance, Reliability & Continuous Improvement
Drive asset performance and availability, ensuring safe operation, minimal downtime, strong entrapment management and achievement of reliability KPIs.
Lead root cause analysis for repeated failures, implementing estate wide corrective and preventative engineering solutions.
Develop and optimise a risk based PPM strategy aligned with lifecycle principles and duty of care requirements.
Contractor & Stakeholder Management
Support contractor performance management, tenders, structured technical reviews and KPI/failure trend analysis.
Implement actions that improve cost efficiency, compliance, service quality and asset reliability.
Build strong cross functional relationships, communicating technical risks, performance insights and improvement plans clearly and effectively.
Cost, Parts & Asset Strategy
Own PME cost performance, identifying efficiency opportunities and delivering sustainable save to invest initiatives without compromising safety or compliance.
Oversee parts strategy and obsolescence management, ensuring availability of critical spares and robust contingency plans for ageing assets.
Lead national engineering improvement projects to standardise processes, enhance asset performance and embed best practice across the estate.
What you'll bring
Deep technical expertise in lifts, escalators, travelators and associated control/safety systems.
Strong understanding of statutory requirements including LOLER, PUWER, EN standards and British Standards.
Experience leading engineering governance or technical disciplines across a large, multi site estate.
Ability to influence, challenge and support senior stakeholders with clarity and confidence.
A passion for safety, continuous improvement and delivering great service.
Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret data, identify trends and drive targeted improvements.
- Degree qualified in an Engineering discipline or time served equivalent�
- Professional registration (IEng/CEng Desirable)�
- Extensive leadership, technical, and maintenance engineering experience within lifts, escalators, or related fields�
- Advanced technical knowledge of lift, escalator, and travelator systems including electrical, mechanical, control, and safety architectures�
- Engineering innovation and continuous improvement delivery�
- Knowledge of asset lifecycle management and maintenance methodologies for PME�
- Proven experience in managing statutory compliance, risk, and operational performance for lifts, escalators, and travelators
