Job Description
Quantum is now, and it's built here.
Oxford Ionics, now part of IonQ, is pioneering the next generation of quantum computing. Using our world-leading trapped-ion technology, we’re building the most powerful, accurate and reliable quantum systems to tackle problems that today’s supercomputers cannot solve. Joining Oxford Ionics means becoming part of a global IonQ team that is transforming the future of quantum technology - faster, at scale, and with real world impact.
IonQ, Inc. [NYSE: IONQ] is the world’s leading quantum company delivering solutions to solve the world’s most complex problems. IonQ’s newest generation quantum computers, IonQ Tempo and IonQ Forte Enterprise, are the latest in cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners such as Amazon Web Services, AstraZeneca, and NVIDIA achieve 20x performance results. The company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance in 2025.
The company is accelerating its technology roadmap and intends to deliver the world’s most powerful quantum computers with 2 million qubits by 2030 to accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modeling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. IonQ’s advancements in quantum networking position the company as a leader in building the quantum internet.
What to expect:
We are looking for a Senior Quantum Field Engineer to join our Field Engineering team at IonQ in South Korea. In this role, you will sit at the intersection of customers, markets, products, algorithms, applications and strategy, helping clients understand how IonQ’s quantum technologies can be applied to real business and technical challenges.
You’ll play an important part in helping IonQ build the world’s best quantum solutions by turning early customer interest into meaningful technical exploration, proof-of-concepts and ultimately production workflows. This is a highly technical, customer-facing role where credibility, clarity and technical correctness come first.
What you'll be responsible for:
In this position, you will work closely with customers, sales, product, applications, marketing, developer relations and engineering teams to explain IonQ’s portfolio, uncover client needs, shape technical solutions and support the growth of IonQ’s quantum computing business across South Korea and the wider APAC market.
You’ll have the opportunity to inspire prospective customers, lead technical discovery, translate business needs into technical workstreams, and help bring quantum applications to life across areas such as financial services, bioscience, chemistry, materials, optimisation, generative AI and other emerging domains.
Key responsibilities include:
- Lead customer-facing technical discussions, demos and discovery sessions, explaining IonQ’s strategy, portfolio and quantum applications across compute, networking, security, sensing and space.
- Translate client business needs into technical projects, working with IonQ’s Applications team to map quantum algorithms into application code and execute proof-of-concepts.
- Guide customer conversations from early ideation through focused technical exploration, proof-of-concept development and potential production workflows.
- Share market and customer insights with Product Management, Engineering, Marketing, Developer Relations and Business Development teams, while supporting conferences, events and awareness-building activities.
Requirements
To be successful in this role, you’ll bring strong technical foundations, excellent customer-facing communication skills and a genuine interest in helping organisations understand where quantum computing can create value. We’re looking for someone who can adapt their communication to different levels of technical depth, build trust with customers, handle competitive objections and work effectively across both commercial and technical teams.
You’ll ideally have experience in a technical customer-facing role such as field engineering, solutions architecture, technical sales, customer engineering or applied science, alongside a relevant STEM background. Quantum computing experience is valuable, but we’re equally interested in people with strong technical curiosity, customer empathy and the ability to help customers move from exploration into practical proof-of-concept or production use cases.
- 5+ years of experience in a technical customer-facing role, with strong customer communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Bachelor’s degree or above in Computer Science, Machine Learning, Data Science, Chemistry, Physics, Engineering or another relevant STEM field.
- Strong interest in quantum computing, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly to customers and stakeholders.
- Experience with Python, Jupyter Notebooks, Qiskit, Cirq or other quantum computing SDKs, ideally alongside broader architecture skills.
- Additional depth through a Master’s or PhD, customer-side industry experience, proof-of-concept delivery, executive presence or experience representing a business at client meetings, events and conferences.
Benefits
Be part of a team that’s shaping the future of quantum. We offer more than just a role, you’ll join a world class community of scientists, engineers and innovators working to unlock the full potential of quantum computing.
We offer a range of benefits, including opportunities to further your career alongside industry leaders, a competitive salary with IonQ stock options, an annual performance bonus, generous annual leave, flexible hybrid working, private medical and dental insurance for you and your family, and much more.
Join us and be part of the future of quantum computing.
We’re proud to be an equal opportunity employer and welcome applicants from all backgrounds.
