Team Admin Support

People come to Northern for trains they can rely on and journeys that feel effortless. Behind the scenes, our Operations teams make that happen every single day – and your role sits right at the heart of it.

As part of our team at Northern, you’d be the person who keeps everything ticking along smoothly. Your work will support Operations Managers and colleagues out on the network, helping them stay organised and focused on delivering great journeys. From keeping key records in shape to coordinating meetings and interviews, you’d bring structure, calm, and a real sense of order to a team that depends on it.

This 18 month fixed-term contract is ideal if you enjoy variety. You’d spend time supporting teams across different locations, travelling when needed to keep the wheels turning where it matters most.

As part of the interview process, if successful you will be invited to attend an Assessment Day on Monday 19th January, you will need to be able to attend on this date to be considered.

What you’ll be doing

  • Supporting Operations Managers and the wider Operations team with day-to-day admin
  • Maintaining and auditing safety and HR records for drivers and conductors
  • Monitoring traincrew competencies in the Asset and Competency Management System (ACMS) and coordinating interviews
  • Organising meetings, taking clear minutes, and managing delay reporting through Bugle
  • Keeping sickness, incident, and late-on-duty information accurate and up to date
  • Providing cover for other admin colleagues during annual leave

About you

You’ll bring strong organisational skills, clear communication, and a love of keeping things in order. Accuracy, confidentiality, and a steady hand with sensitive information all matter here.

  • Confident using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Comfortable taking concise, accurate notes
  • Able to work independently and manage your time well
  • Knowledge of General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) principles

Strong organisation, clear communication, and attention to detail – that’s three things you’ll bring that will make a real difference in this role.

What’s in it for you?

Why Northern?

We’re more than just a train operator. We’re the heartbeat of the North – connecting communities, creating opportunities, and driving sustainable growth. With 2,500 trains running daily, we’re on a mission to improve rail travel and enhance the customer experience while protecting the environment.

Back in 1825, the first passenger train set off in the North of England – and this year, we’re celebrating 200 years of the modern railway. As we look back, we also look forward to the future of Great British Rail. Join us at this pivotal moment in rail history and play your part in our journey.

A place for everyone

The best journeys happen when everyone feels welcome on board. At Northern, we don’t just move people from A to B – we’re building a team where everyone feels they belong.

We can make reasonable adjustments to the process if that’s something you need. We’re also a Level 2 Disability Confident employer, so if you meet the minimum criteria, you’ll always be offered an interview.

All offers are subject to a DBS check and a medical assessment.
