About the role
We have an exciting permanent opportunity at NFU Mutual for a Senior Developer within the IFaces Development Team, Group IT. IFaces Development provides the main in-house resource for the continuous enhancement of the company’s underwriting capabilities through the on-going development, configuration, and support for all the GI insurance products offered by NFUM.
As a Senior RPG Developer, you’ll take ownership of the stability, performance, and continuous evolution of our in house bespoke policy administration systems (Ifaces). You’ll provide hands on support and maintenance across production and non production environments, diagnosing issues, implementing robust fixes, and preventing recurrences through root cause analysis and thorough documentation. Working closely with engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders, you’ll interpret and refine system requirements, translating them into well planned technical solutions. You’ll also manage version control repositories end to end, including branching strategies, merging, peer reviews, and maintaining code quality standards. Alongside this, you’ll review end to end technical designs to understand dependencies and application impacts, offering clear, balanced recommendations that support reliable and secure delivery.
You’ll build strong working relationships with internal and external teams both onshore and offshore to coordinate releases, resolve incidents, and share knowledge across the wider technology function. You’ll contribute to continuous improvement initiatives by maintaining high quality documentation, promoting secure and maintainable coding practices, and proactively developing your skills to stay current with emerging tools, methods, and industry standards. Operating within an Agile framework, you’ll take an active role in sprint ceremonies, estimation, and delivery planning, helping to drive predictable, high quality outcomes across the team.
About you
You’re a skilled problem-solver with strong attention to detail and have a proactive approach. You work well in a collaborative team environment, sharing knowledge and supporting others to deliver effective solutions. Clear and confident communication comes naturally to you, allowing you to engage effectively with both technical teams and business stakeholders. You’re comfortable using SQL to analyse data and produce reports, confident in navigating the IBM iSeries platform and you take pride in delivering reliable, high-quality support.
To join our team, you’ll also have:
- A high level of experience in iSeries RPG Developer, AS400 / iSeries Analyst Programmer, IBM AS400 RPG Developer, Free Format RPG, RPG/ILE, RPG400, CL, SQL
- Experience in TCP/IP Socket development and calling webservices from IBM i
- Experience in XML and JSON
- Full Life Cycle development experience
- Experience of developing within an agile framework.
- Able to excel in a fast-paced development environment and be flexible in approach to work environment and responsibilities.
- The ability to work collaboratively and as a strong team player on a day-to-day basis but also be able to work individually as required.
- Excellent communication skills both written and verbal essential, with the ability to be able to work both within a team and on your own
- Good interpersonal skills.
- A pro-active, creative, analytical, and enquiring nature.
- An aspiration to provide excellent customer service, taking responsibility and ownership of requirements and issues.
- Compliance with team, department and company policy and procedure
- ITIL awareness (desirable)
