Job Description

Data Scientist

  • Work across customer, claims, strategy and underwriting challenges, developing machine learning models and working on GenAI use cases and insight projects to drive business value

  • Take ownership of varied analytical projects and build your career within an established and growing Data Science team

  • Hybrid 80% homeworking and 20% from Stratford Upon Avon

About the role

As a Data Scientist at NFU Mutual, you'll design, develop and deploy advanced analytical, machine learning and AI solutions to solve complex business problems. Working across customer, claims, strategy and underwriting domains, you'll combine statistical modelling, predictive analytics and modern machine learning techniques to generate actionable insights and support decision making at scale.

You'll work closely with business stakeholders to understand challenges, translate them into analytical approaches, and deliver robust, production-ready solutions that create measurable value.

You’ll be part of a team of four Data Scientists, including a Lead Data Scientist, within the wider Data Science and Analytics team. You’ll manage projects from initiation through to delivery, including requirements gathering, solution design, quality assurance, stakeholder updates and presentation of outputs.

Your work will include designing, building and improving machine learning solutions such as predictive models, segmentation and forecasting. The team is also exploring and delivering Generative AI / Large Language Model solutions, providing opportunities to work with modern AI technologies alongside established machine learning techniques.

You’ll build a detailed understanding of relevant datasets, apply robust statistical methods and model governance, and communicate findings clearly so stakeholders can act with confidence. You’ll also contribute to continuous improvement as technology, methods and the data landscape develop.

This is a full time role based in Stratford Upon Avon, with 80% homeworking and 20% of your hours based at the office.

This role is based in our Tiddington Head Office, just outside Stratford Upon Avon. However, we understand how important a positive work life balance is, so to help you give your best, we offer great facilities when you want to be in an office environment and support to work up to 80% of your hours from home.

About you

You’re an experienced Data Scientist who combines commercial and customer focused thinking with a structured approach to delivery. You’re confident consulting with stakeholders, gathering requirements and presenting complex findings in a clear and accessible way. Comfortable working independently and collaboratively, you plan and prioritise effectively, take ownership of end-to-end projects and adapt your approach as needs, methods and technology evolve.

To join NFU Mutual, you’ll also bring

  • Extensive experience in data science, machine learning, advanced analytics or a related discipline, with experience managing analytical projects from initiation to delivery

  • Strong Python and SQL skills, or significant R experience with a commitment to develop your Python capability, plus complex data analysis and data quality assurance

  • Strong knowledge of statistical methods and experimental design, with experience designing, building and implementing machine learning solutions, particularly predictive models

  • Experience with modern business intelligence platforms such as Power BI, Tableau or Qlik Sense is desirable though not essential,

  • Experience with unsupervised ML techniques such as clustering is desirable

  • Cloud, basic data engineering and deployment experience is desirable including Git, continuous integration and delivery, automated testing and model deployment within platforms such as Azure, Snowflake or Databricks.

  • Experience mentoring and coaching Data Scientists or analysts, helping to develop technical capability and sharing best practice across the team. Previous line management experience is welcomed but not required as this is a predominantly hands-on technical role
